To the Honorable Knute Nelson, Governor of Minnesota, SIR:- Pursuant to the requirements of section 18 of chapter 10, general laws of 1887, the Railroad and Warehouse Commission has the honor herewith to submit a report of the doings of the commission for the year ending November 30, 1894, with such facts, statements and explanations as will disclose the actual workings of the system of railroad transportation in its bearings upon the business and prosperity of the people of the state, and such suggestions in relation thereto as seem appropriate to the commission. ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

RAILROAD AND WAREHOUSE COMMISSION

OF THE

STATE OF MINNESOTA.

RAILROAD MILEAGE AND CONSTRUCTION.

The total number of miles of railroad operated in the State of Minnesota on June 30, 1894, was 5,912.43, being an increase over the previous year of 48.54 miles; of which 40.93 was added by the Duluth, Missabe & Northern Railway; 4.38 miles by the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad; 2.90 miles being corrections in the Northern Pacific and .33 miles in the Great Northern mileage.

GROSS EARNINGS.

The amount of gross earnings in Minnesota for the year ending June 30, 1894, was $30,695,524; for the previous year the gross earnings were $37,087,002, showing a decrease for 1894 of $6,391,478.

FREIGHT EARNINGS.

The total freight revenue for 1894 was $23,046,056; for the previous year the freight revenue was $27,742,721, showing a decrease for 1894 of $4,696,665.

PASSENGER EARNINGS.

The total passenger revenue for 1894 was $5,690,152; for the previous year it was $6,934,442, showing a decrease for 1894 of $1,244,290.

MISCELLANEOUS EARNINGS.

The total earnings in 1894 from mail, express, extra baggage, station privileges, stockyards, elevators, switching, car mileage and rents were $1,959,316; for the previous year the same were $2,409,839 showing a decrease for 1894 of $450,523.

OPERATING EXPENSES.

The total proportional operating expenses for Minnesota, as reported by the companies for the year ending June 30, 1894, were $18,119,141; the same for the previous year were $22,069,724, showing a decrease of operating expenses for 1894 of $3,950,583. The decrease in the item maintenance of way and structures was $1,154,646; the decrease in the item maintenance of equipment was $981,653; the decrease in the item conducting transportation was $1,638,918, and the decrease in general expenses was $175,366.

The percentage of operating expenses to gross earnings in 1894 was 59.04 per cent; the same for the previous year was 59.50 per cent.

NET INCOME.

The total proportional net income for Minnesota for the year 1894 was $12,576,383; the net income for the previous year was $15,017,278, showing a decrease for 1894 of $2,440,895.

FREIGHT TRAFFIC.

The total number of tons of freight moved by the railroads in Minnesota in 1894 was 16,923,064; the same for 1893 was 19,085,466 tons, a decrease for 1894 of 2,162,402 tons.

The ton mileage, or tons carried one mile in Minnesota for 1894 was 2,107,719,209 as against 2,424,018,162 for 1893, showing a decrease for 1894 of 316,298,953.

The average rate per ton per mile for 1894 was 1.093 cents; in 1893 the same was 1.114 cents, showing a decrease for 1894 of .021 cents per ton per mile.

The average earnings on each ton of freight moved in 1894 was $1.36, the same for 1893 was $1.45, a decrease for 1894 of 9 cents per The average distance each ton of freight was moved in 1894 was 123 miles; in 1893 it was 127 miles.

PASSENGER TRAFFIC.

The total number of passengers carried in Minnesota in 1894 was 6,046,841, as against 8,121,471 in 1893, showing a decrease in the number of passengers for 1894 of 2,074,630.

The total passenger mileage, or passengers carried one mile, in Minnesota in 1894 was 246,693,875, as against 283,415,147 in 1893, showing a decrease of 36,721,272.

The average rate per passenger per mile for 1894 was 2.26 cents; for 1893 the same was 2.44 cents, showing a decrease for 1894 of .18 cents. The average distance traveled in 1894 was 48 miles; in 1893, 35 miles.

Only one passenger was killed in Minnesota during the year 1894 and 43 were injured in train accidents; in 1893, three passengers

were killed and 115 injured, showing a gratifying decrease in this item of railway statistics.

ACCRUED INTEREST.

The amount of interest accrued on funded debt of all the railroads reporting in Minnesota, for entire lines, for the year ending June 30, 1894, was $28,839,876; interest on current liabilities $336,534, making a total interest charge for the year 1894 of $29,176,410; the same for the previous year was $27,034,991, showing an increase for 1894 of $2,141,416.

RENTALS PAID.

The amount of rentals paid for the use of the tracks of other companies by the roads reporting, for entire lines, for the year ending June 30, 1894, was $7,671,110 (of which the Great Northern Railway company pay $1,752,804 to the St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway company, whose railroad is operated by the former company). In 1893 the rentals so paid were $9,223,438, showing a decrease for 1894 of $1,552,328.

DIVIDENDS PAID.

The total amount of dividends paid during the year ending June 30, 1894, by the railroads operating in Minnesota, for entire lines was $10,537,995; the same for the previous year was $9,721,745, showing an increase for 1894 of $816,250. Two companies that paid no dividends last year, viz., the Eastern Railway of Minnesota and the Willmar & Sioux Falls, this year paid $100,000 and $150,000, respectively.

In addition to the above dividends paid by operating companies, the following companies, not operating their roads, report the following dividends paid during the year 1894:

For the previous year the same companies paid dividens amounting to $1,861,742, a decrease for 1894 of $556,742, all of which is in the St. Paul & Northern Pacific dividend.
