1 ADVERTISEMENT. adoption of the word Pater, in the Hexham Inscription, engraved, and M facing page 91, vol. I. having been objected to by an anonymous writer, in order to fhew it was by no means improper or fingular, I beg leave to refer the reader to the 2d volume of the Archaeologia, page 190, where in the Salifbury Infcription commented on by Mr Gough, the words are Pater Ecclefia Salibirienfis; and that writer gives it the antiquity of the beginning of the 12th century, the fuppofed perfonage for whom that tomb was erected, Roger third Bishop of Salisbury, having been elected A. D. 1102 to that See." His munifi"cence to his infant church intitled him to the name of Pater Ecclefia Salisbirienfis," are his words. The æra and occafion agree critically in the two inftances: others might be pointed out; but this, from its pertinence, may seem sufficient. In my account of Blanchland, page 119, by former writers I was led into an error, touching the family of Forsters, to whom it formerly appertained. This, I prefume, will appear to be duly rectified, in the account of Bambrough, in this volume. The liberal minded reader, I flatter myself, will make allowances for such errors as appear in this work, which, confiftent with its title, is a View of the County. 1 |
