Clay pipe moulded from coarse, gravelly clay, and burned. It shows some rude attempts at carving. Collected near Franklin, Lee county, Iowa, in the vicinity of sundry ancient mounds, by T. Van Hyning, of Des Moines, Iowa, and by him presented to the Historical Department.

65,658. Basket of the Zuni Indians for fruit picking. Made of Yucca angustifolia in diagonal weaving. The pleasing effects on the surface are produced by showing alternately the outside and the inside of the split leaf. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.

42,114. Basket water jar of the Navajo Indians. Made in diagonal twined or wattled basketry dipped in hot pitch. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.

83,984. Basket of the Moki Indians, for collecting fruit. Made in twined weaving showing all the different styles, diagonal, plain and three ply. This is a rare specimen. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.

68,572. Basket of the Zuni Indians, for picking fruit. Made in common wicker work. This style of weaving is not common west of the Rocky mountains. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.

165,117. Basket of the Choctaw Indians. Made of cane in diagonal weaving or plaiting. The black and yellow colors are produced by native dyes. New Orleans Exposition.

20,870. Wallet of the Thlinkit Indians. Made of spruce root. The wrinkled surface is produced by alternating plain weaving with twined weaving. The border is in plain twine, finished off with false braid. Collected by J. G. Swan.

68,536. Water-tight jar of the Zuni Indians. The body is a coiled basket or a basket made in a style called coiled ware. This is dipped in pitch which makes it water tight. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.

20,887. Wallet of the Shegan Indians, Prince of Wales, Alaska. Made of split cedar bark in plain weaving, but looks like diagonal. Collected by J. G. Swan.

166,855. (2) Coiled trays of the Moki Indians. The foundation is a bundle of grass stalks. The sewing is done with split leaves of the Yucca. Baskets of this sort are always used for holding meal in their great festivals. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.

166,821 and 166,362. Wicker trays of the Moki Indians of Arizona. Made of small shoots and regularly woven in twilled effect. Used to hold meal in their ceremonies. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.

150,390. Small basket from the Samoan Islands. Made in a series of coiled plating resembling Japanese work. Collected by the Bureau of Ethnology.
