The Story of the American Soldier in War and Peace," by Elbridge S. Brooks (Lothrop), is a companion volume to the author's "Story of the American Sailor," published last year. The life of the American sailor, from the standpoint of the naval cadet, is told by H. H. Clark, of the U. S. Navy, in the story of "Joe Bently" (Lothrop). Oliver Optic's latest series, "The Blue and the Gray," is now made to include "Within the Enemy's Lines" as its second volume (Lee & Shepard).

Science calls for the attention of the young in three attractive volumes. One is a translation from the French of Arnold Boscowitz's work on "Earthquakes" (Routledge). The work is accompanied by several illustrations. "Feathers, Furs, and Fins' (Estes & Lauriat) is a volume of stories of animal life by a number of contributors. It is for very young readers, and is handsomely illustrated. In her Famous Men of Science," Mrs. Sarah K. Bolton recounts the lives of a dozen or more of the great discoverers, from Galileo to Darwin. traits of them all are included.

Illustrations of Spires and Towers of the

Medieval Churches of England.

Preceded by some observations on the Architecture of the Middle Ages and its Spire-Growth. By CHARLES WICKES. One vol., folio, nearly 100 plates, with text, $15.00.

When Mr. Charles Wickes prepared his famous work on "Spires and Towers," he printed, before the issue of the colored drawings, an uncolored edition for the special use of architects, thus placing before the profession one of the most useful and beautiful works in existence.

These prints have lost nothing of their original force and delicacy in reproduction, and the reprint is quite as valuable and useful as the original. The present edition contains the forty pages of text and notes, not less valuable than the plates.
