Merrill Edward Gates, A. M., of Albany, for his eminent success as a classical teacher and as principal for ten years of the Albany Academy.

Daniel Strobel Martin, A. M., of New York city, for his successful services as a professor of natural history in the Rutgers Female College. Under chapter 746 of the Laws of 1872, authorizing the examination of medical students for the degree of Doctor of Medicine, Louis Eusebius Rade, of New York city, was duly examined by a board of medical examiners and reported as duly qualified. Whereupon the degree of Doctor of Medicine was granted to him by the Board of Regents.

On the nomination of the Homoeopathic Medical Society of the State of New York, in accordance with the provisions of chapter 268 of the Laws of 1862, the honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine was conferred on the following physicians:

Austin Wells Holden, M. D., of Glen's Falls.
Asa Stone Couch, M. D., of Fredonia.
Lester Marcus Pratt, M. D., of Albany.
Edward Bayard, M. D., of New York.

STATE LIBRARY.

The Board of Regents, who are by law the trustees of the State Library, have transmitted to the Legislature a detailed report to which the Legislature is respectfully referred for an account of its increase and its present condition. The library contained at the close of the year 1879, the following volumes :

STATE MUSEUM.

The report of the Board of Regents, as trustees of the State Museum, which has been already presented to the Legislature, will give in detail the operations of this State institution. Steady progress has been made in the collection of specimens and their preparation for exhibition. The trustees beg respectfully to call your attention to the necessity of additional room for the collections and work of the Museum. Since its location in its present quarters, it has entirely outgrown the accommodations provided for it. The utility of the scientific collections is in a great measure lost by the imperfect means which exist for exhibiting them.

BOUNDARY SURVEY.

The work on the adjustment of the southern boundary of the State has not made any material progress during the past year. The Pennsylvania commissioners were not provided with the means to carry on the work, and no field work was therefore undertaken. By an act passed May 20, 1880, the Legislature has definitely fixed the principles on which the boundaries are to be settled. The board named as commissioners under this act, Chancellor Pierson and Regents Leavenworth and Depew. It is hoped that during their present sessions the legislatures of both Pennsylvania and New Jersey may take such action as to enable the commissioners appointed on the part of New York to finish speedily the work intrusted to them.

All of which is respectfully submitted.

By order of the Regents,

DAVID MURRAY,

H. R. PIERSON,

Chancellor of the University.

Secretary.
