The spring of the regenerate heart,
The pulse, the glow of every part,
Is the true love of Christ our Lord,
As man embraced, as God adored.

6.

REATE in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.
Ps. li. 10.

O that in word, in spirit, and in deed,
Almighty Father, I could live to Thee!
O that, from sin's dark thrall for ever freed,
This heart could more anticipate the meed
It hopes to reap throughout eternity.

But I am weak, and sinful, Lord, as weak;
To-day's resolve to-morrow melts away;
I need Thy help, yet all too coldly seek !-
O, let Thy Spirit in my bosom speak,

Revealing both my wants, and how to pray.

7.

EITHER will I offer burnt-offerings unto the Lord my God of that which 2 Sam. xxiv. 24.

doth cost me nothing.

Lord, in all I offer Thee,
Let this rule my guidance be,-
It must cost me loss or pain,
Else Thou wilt not deem it gain.

8.

HE is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by

Him, seeing He ever liveth to make inter-
cession for them.
Heb. vii. 25.

O Thou, the contrite sinners' Friend,
Who loving, lov'st them to the end,
On this alone my hopes depend,

That Thou wilt plead for me!

9.

OR Thou, O Lord God, art the thing that I long for.

Is there a thing beneath the sun

Ps. lxxi. 4.

That strives with Thee my heart to share?

Ah! tear it thence and reign alone

The Lord of every motion there.

Then shall my heart from earth be free,

When it hath found repose in Thee.

IO.

SOFT answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Prov. xv. I.

From idle words, that restless throng,

And haunt our hearts when we would pray,
From pride's false chime, and jarring wrong,
Seal Thou my lips, and guard the way.

II.

Tis I be not afraid. St. Matt. xiv. 27.

[ocr errors]

Speak, and my griefs no more are heard;
Speak, and my fears are laid;

Speak, and my soul shall bless the word,
"Tis I: be not afraid."

When on the bed of death I lie,

And stretch my hands for aid,
Stand Thou before my glazing eye,
And say "Be not afraid."

Before Thy judgment-seat above
When nature sinks dismay'd,
O cheer me with a word of love-
""Tis I: be not afraid."

12.

HE Father Himself loveth you, because ye have loved Me, and have believed that I came out from God. St. John xvi. 27.

Raise thy repining eyes, and take true measure
Of thine eternal treasure;

The Father of thy Lord can grudge thee nought,
The world for thee was bought,

And as this landscape broad-earth, sea, and sky,
All centres in thine eye,

So all God does, if rightly understood,
Shall work thy final good.

13.

W HATSOEVER thy hand findeth to

do, do it with thy might.

Eccles. ix. 10.

Whate'er my hand or heart design,
Of holy thought, or work divine,
Of alms, or fast, or prayer;
May I, my God, with all my might,
Do it for Thee, and in Thy sight,
Thy love mine only care.

14.

HE God of all grace, who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. I Pet. V. 10.

But first, by many a stern and fiery blast

The world's rude furnace must thy blood refine,
And many a gale of keenest woe be pass'd
Till every pulse beat true to airs divine,
Till every limb obey the mounting soul,
The mounting soul, the call by Jesus given.

He who the stormy heart can so control,
The laggard body soon will waft to Heaven.

15.

I AM with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest.

Gen. xxviii. 15.

Since Thou hast added now, O God!
Unto my life another day,
And giv'st me leave to walk abroad,
And labour in my lawful way;
My walks and works with me begin,
Conduct me forth, and bring me in.

16.

THE Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple.

U

The long delays of weary days,

Mal. iii. 1.

In Thy good time shall cease;
Some blessed morn Thou wilt return,
And we depart in peace.'

17.

NTO the godly there ariseth up light

in the darkness.

Ps. cxii, 4.

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom,

Lead Thou me on!

The night is dark, and I am far from home-
Lead Thou me on!

Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see

The distant scene,-one step enough for me.
