O cowardly feeling, away!
Far hence the impatient desire!
My God, I am willing to stay,
And do all that Thy will may require.

Now had I the wings of a dove,
I'd remain in the place where I am;
I would fold them in patience and love,
And wait till my summons should come.

If Thou shouldst bend down from the skies,
Dear Lord, and invite me to flee,
In a moment expanded they'd rise,
And swiftly would bear me to Thee.

CHRIST'S REIGN ON EARTH.

HAIL to the LORD'S Anointed,
Great David's greater SON!
Hail, in the time appointed,
His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
To set the captive free,

To take away transgression,
And rule in equity.

T

He shall come down like showers
Upon the fruitful earth;

And joy and hope, like flowers,
Spring up at His Holy Birth.
Before Him, on the mountains,
Shall peace, His herald, go;
And righteousness, as fountains,
From hill to valley flow.

Arabia's desert ranger

To Him shall bow the knee;
The Ethiopian stranger
His glory come to see.
With offerings of devotion
Ships of the isles shall meet,
To pour the wealth of ocean
In tribute at His feet.

Kings shall fall down before Him,
And gold and incense bring;
All nations shall adore Him,
His praise all people sing.
For He shall have dominion
O'er rivers, seas, and shore,
Far as the eagle's pinion

Or dove's light wing can soar.

THE COMING OF CHRIST.

THE LORD will come! the earth shall quake,
The hills their lasting seat forsake ;
And, withering, from the vault of night,
The stars withdraw their feeble light.

The LORD will come! but not the same
As once in lowly form He came;
A gentle LAMB to slaughter led,
The bruised, the suffering, and the dead.

The LORD will come! in dreadful form,
With wreath of flame, and robe of storm,
On cherub wings, and wings of wind,
Anointed Judge of human kind.

Can this be He, who wont to stray,
A pilgrim on the world's highway?
By power oppressed, and marked by pride,
The Nazarene, the crucified!

Go, sinner, to the rocks complain;
Go, seek the mountain's cleft in vain:
But faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy,-"The LORD is come."

BISHOP HEBER.

THE CHRISTIAN'S PROGRESS.

OFT in sorrow, oft in woe,
Onward, Christians, onward go:
Fight the fight, maintain the strife,
Strengthened with the bread of life.

Onward, Christians, onward go,
Join the war, and face the foe:
Will ye flee in danger's hour?
Know ye not your Captain's power?

Let your drooping hearts be glad ;
March, in heavenly armour clad :
Fight, nor think the battle long,
Soon shall victory tune your song.

Let not sorrow dim your eye,
Soon shall every tear be dry;
Let not fears your course impede,
Great

your strength if great your need.

Onward, then, in battle move,
More than conquerors ye shall prove :
Though opposed by many a foe,

Christian soldiers, onward go.

THE BEAUTIES OF CREATION.

I PRAISED the earth, in beauty seen,
With garlands gay of tender green ;
I praised the sea, whose spacious field
Shone glorious as a silver shield :
And earth and ocean seemed to say,
"Our beauties are but for a day.”

I praised the sun, whose chariot rolled On wheels of amber and of gold; I praised the moon, whose softer eye Gleamed sweetly through the summer sky: But moon and sun in answer said, "Our days of light are numberèd.”

O GOD, O good beyond compare!
If thus Thy lower works are fair:
If thus Thy beauties gild the span
Of ruined earth and sinful man,
How glorious must that mansion be,

Where Thy redeemed shall dwell with Thee.

BISHOP HEBER.
