that family, which embraces for him 'all that makes it life to live,'-in which are concentrated so many sacred ties and dear affections, so many delightful associations and hopes; and where the approving smiles and grateful love of all its members and the acknowledgment that they owe their happiness to him, shall be the certain reward of his toils? Be then industrious, that plenty as well as peace may be within thy walls. With industry are connected innumerable benefits,-exemp‐ tion from evil passions and the influence of temptation, the pleasure of beholding the work of one's own hands, order and regularity, a cheerfulness that will go with you to the fireside, and, to crown the whole, that competence of good things, which will dispel from your dwelling one of the most fruitful sources of discontent, repining and reproach,—which will meet all the reasonable demands of your household for subsistence, education and a respectable standing in society,-which will give you a sense of comfort, a feeling of security against want, of defence and shelter from the congealing frosts and howling storms of winter.

With these outward blessings there must be united another in the heart,to crown and sanctify the whole,— I mean religion. There must be a sense of God, a pervading sentiment of piety,-a hope and growing preparation for heaven in a happy family. For, however tenderly you may be attached to each other, your mutual love, your strict and fond embraces cannot avail to keep you forever together. However cheerful and

smiling and full of joy all may at present appear in your dwellings, the time will soon come, when, in the touch

ing language of the poct,.

'No more for you the blazing hearth will burn,

Or busy housewife ply her evening care,

No children run to lisp their sire's return,

Or climb his knees the envied kiss to share.'

Your dwelling will be left desolate, and your bodies laid in the grave to mingle with their parent dust. Yet do not suffer the mention of this inevitable event to throw a gloom over your enjoyments. And that it may not, accustom yourselves and household habitually your to contemplate and hope for a final remove from the earthly paradise of domestic peace and love, to a paradise above, there to renew, perfect, and perpetuate all your virtuous affections and innocent attachments and pure delights in your Father's house and heavenly presence forever.

In presenting the simple and obvious considerations, that have been offered to your attention in this discourse, it has been my wish that, on this day more especially, your hearts might rise in thankful acknowledgments to Almighty God, that, by the bountiful harvests and the success with which he has crowned the honest labors and enterprise of all classes the past season, he has done all on his part to enable you to enjoy the rich blessings of domestic peace and comfort. In possession of the most ample and invaluable privileges, civil and sacred,— belonging to a free, enlightened, prosperous and wellregulated community, who is he, that can retire this day to a plentiful repast-to tranquillity and comfort in his dwelling,-to see the friends most dear to him about him,-to feel the glow and vigor of health in his frame, and not be thankful to the Lord of life and Giver of every good gift, for his enjoyments? Blessed with the

common affinities of nature, a quiet home, and food and raiment and warmth,-with a grateful heart, an approving conscience and contented mind, nothing is wanting of all that man can enjoy, to render your condition as happy as is good for mortals, who are heirs and expectants of a better country, even an heavenly,-and need therefore to be reminded by the imperfections and changes and sometimes painful discipline of the present state, that this is not the place of their rest. While then you behold the candle of the Lord, in the beautiful language of Scripture, shining upon your dwelling, and your children about you, and peace and plenty within your walls, let a deep-felt sense of the goodness of God penetrate your hearts and stir up all that is within you to praise and bless his holy name, not only today, but all your days. And I will still pray, as is my duty and my privilege, for the place where are my brethren and friends and the house of our God,-that your industry and enterprise may be crowned with increasing success and prosperity;-that you may find in your dwellings all the joys and heart-felt satisfactions, that bless the home of virtuous and affectionate families, that here you may long enjoy all that mortals can innocently enjoy,—that you may finally go away to celebrate an everlasting thanksgiving, a perpetual jubilee, in the great community of the blessed in God's heavenly presence forever. Amen.

LOVE, THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW.

ROMANS XIII. 10.-LOVE IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW.

It is obvious, that the Apostle, in our text, designed to condense the two great commands of our blessed Lord, on which,he declared, hung all the law and the prophets. Love comprises three essential attributes-union or attachment, delight, and a reigning desire to please. The object of love is goodness, or moral excellence. In the perfect exercise of love, its attributes will be drawn into action, in proporton as goodness prevails and is realized in its object. There are various degrees of goodness, from the faintest spark of benevolence, up to the fountain of all moral excellence, where it exists without alloy, unlimited, and eternal. Hence where this heavenly principle reigns, God will be loved supremely, and his creatures in proportion as they bear his image. The correct exercise of this power is the great source of intellectual happiness. Habitually Contemplating the Divine character as displayed in his works and word, especially dwelling on his goodness and mercy
