Hourly wage rates on Puerto Rico sugarcane farms and on all farms in the Southern States, Apr. 1, 1943, and Apr. 1, 1933-Continued

[blocks in formation]

On pages 529 and 532 reference was made in the testimony of Mr. Antonio Roig to the following letter, dated June 1, 1943, from the Puerto Rico Land Authority to Mr. Roig:

Mr. ANTONIO A. ROIG,

Humacao, P. R.

LAND AUTHORITY OF PUERTO RICO,
Santurce, P. R., June 1, 1943.

MY DEAR SIR: We received your letter of May 27, 1943, in which you state that we should pay you $21,278.10 for the farm denominated "Comuna," including the houses thereon.

In your letter of November 16, 1942, you offered to sell us the properties denominated "Fermina" and "Comuna," including the houses on said farms for the amount of $36,125. As we have purchased the farm "Fermina" for the sum of $15,840, it would be reasonable to suppose that, if you have not changed your mind, you would be willing to sell the "Comuna" for the difference, which is $20,285. You nevertheless now ask $21,278.10 for said property.

It is evident that we will not be able to reach an agreement and therefore we are going to turn this matter over to our legal division so that they would procede to expropriate the farm Comuna for the amount of $12,119, which is the just and reasonable value that our appraisers have given to the farm, and not for the amount of $16,000, which we recently offered in order to avoid the delays and inconveniences of a judicial procedure.

Very truly yours,
