Mesopotamia, or Padan-aram, Gen. xxviii. 2-5, now called Ul.jezeerah, a country in Asia, between the rivers Euphrates and Tigris. Mesopotamia was the first residence of man, both before and after the flood, including within its boundary Eden, Shinar, and Babylon. It was the native country of Abraham, and of the Patriarchs, with the exception of Benjamin, Gen. xi. 31; xxviii. xxix. 1-end; xxxv. 16-20. Acts vii. 2-end. Miletum, a town in Crete, 2 Tim. iv. 20. Miletus, a city and sea-port of Caria, in Asia Minor. It was the birth-place of Thales, one of the seven wise men of Greece; and of Anaximander, his disciple; of Timotheus, the celebrated musician; Anaximenes, the philosopher; and Cadmus, who invented the Greek alphabet. In this city Paul delivered his solemn address to the elders of the church of Ephesus, Acts xx. 17—38.
