iv. 7, 8, Beloved, let us love one another'; for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God', and knoweth God. He that loveth not', knoweth not God; for God' is love. 20, 21, If a man say, I love God', and hateth his brother', he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother' whom he hath seen', how can he love God' whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God', love his brother also`.

5. To forgive him.-Matt. v. 43-45, Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour', and hate thine enemy: But I say unto you, Love your enemies', bless them that curse you', do good' to them that hate you', and pray for them which despitefully use you' and persecute you`; That ye may be the children of your Father' which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil', and on the good'`; and sendeth rain on the just' and on the unjust`. Matt. vi. 14, 15, For if ye forgive men their trespasses', your heavenly Father will also for.. give you': But if ye forgive not men their trespasses', neither will your Father forgive your trespasses`. Luke xvii. 3, 4, Take heed to yourselves': If thy brother trespass against thee', rebuke him`; and if he repent', forgive him`. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day`, and seven times in a day turn again to thee', saying, I repent`; thou shalt forgive him. Rom. xii. 19-21, Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves', but rather give place unto wrath': for it is written, Vengeance is mine'; I will repay', saith the

Lord'. Therefore, if thine enemy hunger', feed him`; if he thirst', give him drink`: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head'. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil' with good.

6. To Admonish him and bear admonition.-Lev. xix. 17, Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour', and not suffer sin upon him. Ps. cxli. 5, Let the righteous smite me', it shall be a kindness; and let him reprove me, it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head': for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities. Prov. xv. 32, He that refuseth instruction' despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. Prov. xxv. 9, 12, Debate thy cause' with thy neighbour himself, and discover not a secret' to another. As an ear-ring of gold`, and an ornament of fine gold', so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. Prov. xxix. 1, He that, being often reproved, hardeneth his neck', shall suddenly be destroyed', and that without remedy. Matt. xviii. 15—17, Moreover, if thy brother shall trespass against thee', go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother'. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more', that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them', tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church', let him be unto thee as an heathen man' and a publican'.

XVII. RELATIVE DUTIES.

1. Of Husbands.-Eph. v. 25, 28, Husbands' love your wives', even as Christ also loved the church', and gave himself for it. So ought men to love their wives' as their own bodies: he that loveth his wife loveth himself`.

2. Of Wives.-Eph. v. 22, Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands', as unto the Lord`. 24, Therefore, as the church is subject unto Christ', so let the wives be to their own husbands' in every thing. Titus ii. 4, 5, Teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet', chaste, keepers at home`, good', obedient to their own husbands', that the word of God be not blasphemed`.

3. Of Parents. Deut. iv. 9, Only take heed to thyself', and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart! all the days of thy life; but teach them' thy sons' sons`. vi. 6, 7, And these words, which I command thee this day', shall be in thine heart, And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children`, and shalt talk of them' when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way', and when thou liest down', and when thou risest up. Ps. lxxviii. 5-7, For he established a testimony in Jacob`, and appointed a law in Israel', which

he commanded our fathers', that they should make them known to their children; That the generation to come might know them', even the children which should be born, who should arise and declare them to their children; That they might set their hope in God', and not forget the works of God', but keep his commandments. Prov. xiii. 24, He that spareth the rod hateth his son': but he that loveth him' chas teneth him betimes. Prov. xix 18, Chasten thy son while there is hope', and let not thy soul spare for his crying. xxii. 6, Train up a child' in the way he should go`; and when he is old', he will not depart from it. xxiii. 13, 14, Withhold not correction' from the child; for if thou beatest him with the rod he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. Eph. vi. 4, And, ye fathers', provoke not your children to wrath`: but bring them up in the nurture' and admonition of the Lord. 1 Tim. v. 8, But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house', he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

4. Of Children.-Lev. xix. 3, Ye shall fear every man his mother and his father, and keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. Deut. xxvii. 16, Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother and all the people shall say, Amen. Eph. vi. 1-3, Children', obey your parents in the Lord` : for this' is right. Honour thy father and mother`, (which is the first commandment with promise',)

That it may be well with thee', and thou mayest live long on the earth. 1 Tim. v. 4, But if any widow have children`, or nephews', let them learn first to show piety at home, and to requite their parents': for that is good' and acceptable before God'.

5. Of Masters.-Deut. xxiv. 14, 15, Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor' and needy`, whether he be of thy brethren', or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates': At his day thou shalt give him his hire`, neither shall the sun' go down upon it; for he is poor', and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord', and it be sin unto thee. Jer. xxii. 13, Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness', and his chambers by wrong`; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work. Eph. vi. 9, And, ye masters, do the same things unto them', forbearing threatening': knowing that your Master also is in heaven; nei. ther is there respect of persons' with him`. Col. iv. 1, Masters give unto your servants that which is just' and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master' in heaven`.

6. Of Servants.—Eph. vi. 5-8, Servants be obedient to them that are your masters' according to the flesh, with fear' and trembling', in singleness of your heart', as unto Christ': Not with eye-service as men-pleasers'; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart'; With good-will
