TO TEACHERS.

This volume, with a few changes and additions, was originally published in two separate parts, but, with the impression that a combination of the two will prove more acceptable, they are so presented in this issue.

The book contains about six hundred selections, from more than two hundred different authors, and each selection contains a thought worthy the attention of youth.

A lady of highly successful and varied experience in school work, having used PART I, writes: "I am glad to tell you what a help Memory Gems' have been to me. I have used them for lessons in Grammar, Spelling, Memory, Literature, etc. My pupils are always greatly interested in them, and I wish every teacher might enjoy the satisfaction and profit I have received from their use."

Very much of the benefit from the use of this volume will depend upon the teacher, and it is believed

that with a little tact on the part of teachers it will prove both interesting and instructive.

It is recommended that special attention be given to the following points:

1. An accurate and careful reading or reciting the selections.

2. A brief account, so far as may be, of the author of the selection read or recited.

3. A frequent expansion of the subject or thought of a selection in a conversational way.

Hoping that the little manual may prove useful to pupils and helpful to teachers, it is commended to their attention by their friend,

NEW BRITAIN, Aug., 1888.

THE COMPILER.

CHOICE SELECTIONS.

PART I.

1. What we learn in our youth grows up with us, and in time becomes a part of the mind itself.Anon.

2. They are never alone that are accompanied with noble thoughts.-Sidney.

3. Never be discouraged by trifles.

If a spider

breaks his thread twenty times he will mend it as many. Perseverance and patience will accomplish

wonders.-Anon.

4.

5.

Truth crushed to earth shall rise again :
The eternal years of God are hers;
But error, wounded, writhes with pain,
And dies among his worshipers.—Bryant.

If God has made the world so fair,

Where sin and death abound,

How beautiful beyond compare

Will Paradise be found.-Montgomery.
