O LORD, we humbly desire to seek thy face, and to wait upon thee in the duties of thy worship. Let our prayer be set before thee as incense, and the lifting up of our hands as an acceptable sacrifice. To whom should we go but unto thee, the Father of mercies and the fountain of goodness, who art able to do abundantly for us, even above all that we can ask or think. There is in us no good thing to recommend us to thy favor and acceptance, but a proneness and inclination to what is displeasing in thy eyes, and destructive to our souls. Not only were we by nature the children of wrath, but we have been daily trespassing upon thee, and still adding to the heavy score of our offences. O see our sins punished in our Saviour, who was wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities. And as he who knew no sin, was made sin for us, so may we be saved through faith in his merits, where we could not be saved by any worth of our own.

Heavenly Father, we not only beg for pardoning mercy, but also for power against sin, and grace sufficient to renounce and triumph over it, that we may walk more perfectly before thee, in all the duties of piety and holiness. Suffer us not to be tempted above what we are able to bear: but make our temptations less, or thy grace in us, and our spiritual strength, greater than every trial, that no iniquities may prevail against us, nor any presumptuous sin have dominion over us. O make us

more conformable to the example and the precepts of our Saviour, and more transformed into his holy image and likeness. Suffer us not to profess the religion of Jesus Christ to the disparagement of it in the world; but let our light shine before men, to thy glory, O heavenly Father, and to the edification of those with whom we have our conversation.

And since the time of our abode in this world. is so short and uncertain, and we have an everlasting estate to abide in after our departure hence, let us not here set up our rest, as if we were at home upon earth, nor expect a long or sure enjoyment of any of those things that perish in the using: but all the days of our appointed time, may we wait, till our change come; and not only live in expectation of it, but in the daily serious preparation for it; in the exercise of all those graces and good works that may make it unto us Christ to live, and gain to die; that in life and death we may be always thine, still safe in thy hands, and acceptable in thy sight.

And, together with our own, we commend to thy mercy, O God of the spirits of all flesh, the necessities and distresses of all our brethren throughout the world. Enlighten the ignorant, awaken the careless and the secure, reclaim the vicious, and establish the unsettled. Bring all to the knowledge and love of thy truth, to the participation of thy grace, and to the obedience of Christ. We pray, for all magistrates, and ministers of the Gospel;

for all our friends and relations; and all the afflicted every where, especially those for whose happiness and salvation thou knowest us to be chiefly concerned. O do thou for us, and for them, as thou knowest best, and most needful, for thy own mercy's sake.

As we pray to thee, O God, for what we want, so we desire to praise thee for all that we have received at thy hands. And blessed be thy name, O Lord, that we have any thing, yea, that we have so many things, for which to love, and bless, and praise thee. What shall we render to the Lord for all his benefits! What can we give to thee our God, but the glory of thy own gifts and goodness! O Lord, let not our hearts be shut and straitened towards thee, whose hand is every day so open unto us; but do thou possess, and animate them with greater love and thankfulness, that we may serve thee with our whole heart, and glorify thy name, by a devout life and conversation, evermore. Show us the light of thy countenance, O Lord, and refresh us with the sense of thy love and favor in our Redeemer; to whom, with thy eternal self, and Holy Spirit, be all thanks and praise, and glory, ascribed by us, and by all thy Church, world without end. JAMES i 12.-Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

HEB. xii. 5. My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees.

JAMES V. 7.-Be patient brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient: establish your hearts for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

1 Peter iv. 12.-Beloved, think it not strange, concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

1 COR. X. 13.-There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptatio, also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

2 COR. iv. 16.-For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

17. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

1 PETER V. 6.—Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. And the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

ALMIGHTY GOD, we beseech thee mercifully to behold this thy family of sinful creatures, for whom thy blessed Son was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross. Grant that drawing nigh unto thee in his name, and pleading before thee his most precious blood-shedding, we may be ade partakers of all the benefits of his passion.

O Lord, we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty; provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable.
