may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee, in good works, to the glory of thy name. Defend and bless, with thy most gracious providence, our relations, friends, and benefactors; and grant that we may all be loved of thee. Let our dwellings, our persons, our substance, and all that we have, be protected and blessed of thee, the God of all mercy, this night, and for evermore.

[Here introduce any appropriate Collect.]

Favourably regard, O heavenly Father, this our evening sacrifice; and answer us, we beseech thee, in these, and all our prayers, which we have made before thee during the week; pardoning what has been sinful in us; receiving the glory of all that has been pleasing in thy sight; and graciously accepting us, and our imperfect services, at the hands of Jesus Christ; to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Our Father, &c.

HYMN FOR MORNING OR EVENING. (c. M.)

1 BEHOLD, O Lord, a household meet,
To offer praise and prayer;

And whilst we worship at thy feet,
Vouchsafe thy gracious ear.

2 Our lives and times are in thy hand,
Our springs are all in thee;
We live or die at thy command,
And yet how vile are we!

3 Look down propitious, mighty God,
And pardon all our sin;

Our house and hearts make thine abode,
And rule and reign within.

4 Then shall our souls, and all our pow'rs
Be thine, and thine alone;

Our happy days, and nights, and hours,
And all we have, thine own.

SHORTER PRAYERS

FOR A FAMILY.

A Morning Prayer.

PSALM CXXI.-I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh even from the Lord, who hath made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: and he that keepeth thee will not sleep. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord himself is thy keeper: the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand: So that the sun shall not burn thee by day, neither the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil; yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth for evermore.

O ALMIGHTY GOD, by whose wisdom and power we were created, and by whose providence we are sustained, we give thee humble thanks, for that thou hast vouchsafed to deliver us, thy servants, from all the perils and dangers of the past night, and that thou hast opened our eyes to see the light, and enjoy the privileges, of another day. Grant, we beseech thee, most merciful Father, that we, through thy help, may both faithfully live and walk, according to thy will in this life present, and also may be partakers of everlasting glory in the life to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

O Lord, we beseech thee, mercifully hear our prayers, and spare all those who confess their sins unto thee, that they whose consciences by sin are accused, by thy merciful pardon may be absolved: and because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without thee, grant us the help of thy grace, that in keeping thy commandments, we may please thee, both in will and deed, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, the protector of all that trust in thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy; vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to direct, sanctify, and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of thy laws, and in the works of thy commandments, that through thy most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul. Thou knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright; grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, &c.

An Evening Prayer.

PSALM CXlvii. O praise the Lord; for it is a good thing to sing praises unto our God; yea, a joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful. He healeth those that are broken

in heart, and giveth medicine to heal their sickness. telleth the number of the stars, and calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and great is his power; yea, and his wisdom is infinite. The Lord setteth up the meek, and bringeth the ungodly down to the ground. O sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praises upon the harp unto our God; Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth rain for the earth; and maketh the grass to grow upon the mountains, and herb for the use of men. Who giveth fodder unto the cattle, and feedeth the young ravens that call upon him. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Sion.

Assist us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications and prayers; and dispose the way of thy servants towards the attainment of everlasting salvation; that among all the changes and chances of this mortal life, we may ever be defended by thy most gracious and ready help, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity, three Persons and one God; have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.

Remember not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our forefathers, neither take thou vengeance of our sins: Spare us, good Lord; spare thy people, whom thou hast redeemed with thy most precious blood, and be not angry with us for ever. We beseech thee, to give us true repentance, to forgive us all our sins, negligences and ignorances, and to endue us with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, to amend our lives according to thy holy word.
