tered persecution and death, have entered into eternal life in thy faith and fear. Particularly we rejoice in the victories over the world, and the triumphs of grace achieved by thy holy servant

St. day.

whom the Church commemorates this

Let that mighty grace, O Lord, which enabled them to conquer all opposition, support and animate us, who are surrounded with dangers and temptations. May we learn to be humble and meek, and to submit all our desires to the will of God; to govern our senses by reason, and our reason by the dictates of revelation; to hold fast thy true religion and worship, and never to live unworthy thereof; to take up the cross, and to resist unto blood, striving against sin. Let their mortified and devout lives, their purity and charity, their patient suffering, and perseverance unto the end, be always so imprinted upon our minds, that in following their example we may inherit those promises of which they are now partakers.

For a Public Fast Day.

On this day of public humiliation and sorrow, we do humbly confess, O Lord, that we are sinful members of a sinful nation, and that the calamities we are enduring, and the sufferings which we dread, are less than our wickedness deserves.

We have abused thy mercy, and trampled upon thy laws, and profaned thy day and thy worship, and not trembled at thy threatening judgments. Thou hast shown us wonderful things in thy goodness, O God of our salvation, and hast protected us from secret malice and open violence. Thou hast continued to us the light of thy gospel, and the grace of thy sacraments, and with our other mercies, hast given us security from the superstitions and tyranny under which other nations have groaned. But by luxury and extravagance, by discord and fraud, by drunkenness and profligacy, the whole nation is polluted in thy sight, and thy people have not mourned and wept as they ought to have done. And now, O Lord, hear us when we cry unto thee, and send out into the land a spirit of true repentance and reformation. Awaken the careless, enlighten the ignorant, convince the unbeliever, and convert the vicious. Through the blood of thy beloved Son, pardon our sins, take us to be thy people again, and reign in us by thy Holy Spirit. O turn from us the judgments we are afraid of. Say unto thy awful visitations, "It is enough,” and neither by sword nor pestilence, neither by famine, nor by the fruits of our own follies and vices, pour out upon us the vengeance we deserve. O avert, gracious Lord, in particular from us who are here before thee, the penalties of the public iniquity, and turn all our hearts to thee with an acceptable penitence and faith.

For a Young Person going out into the World. WE commend to thy most watchful providence and tender mercy, thy young servant, who is going out from among us, to encounter the dangers and trials of the world. O do thou make plain his way before him. Comfort him with a sense of thy goodness, and go with him wherever he removes, and in whatever he is engaged, by the ministry of good angels, and by thy indwelling Spirit. Defend him, O Lord, we beseech thee, against the evils, and temptations, and disasters of the world, and grant that he may never be led away by the wicked customs and lusts of it; but obediently keeping thy holy commandments, and walking in the same all his days, may be an instrument of thy glory; and after he has served thee faithfully in this world, may be made partaker of everlasting happiness in that which is to come.

When any Member of the Family is Sick.

THOU, O Lord, givest to thy creatures health and strength, and when thou seest fit, visitest them with sickness and infirmity; be pleased now, to hear the prayers which we offer in behalf of thy servant who is dear to us, and who is now afflicted by thy hand. Look down from heaven, behold,

visit, and in thine own good time relieve him. Direct to the use of suitable means for his recovery: and bless the application of them. Mitigate the sufferings of his disease; and dispose him to place all his trust and confidence, not in the help of man, but in thy promises, and power, and love. Be merciful unto him, gracious Lord, not according to our deservings, but according to the necessity of his case, and the multitude of thy mercies. In submission to thy most wise and good disposal of all things, we beseech thee, that this bitter cup may pass away from thy servants, or give us grace so to improve it, as to set us forward on our way to life eternal.

For a Sick Child

Look down from heaven, O gracious Father, we humbly beseech thee, with the eyes of mercy upon the sick child for whom our fears are awakened. Deliver him, O Lord, in thy good appointed time from his bodily pain, and visit him with thy salvation; that if it should be thy good pleasure to prolong his days here on earth, he may live to thee, and be an instrument of thy glory, by serving thee faithfully, and doing good in his generation. Or else, receive him into those heavenly habitations where the souls of those who sleep in the Lord Jesus enjoy perpetual rest and felicity.

For a Family in Affliction.

THOU hast taught us, O Lord, in thy holy word, that thou dost not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men. Look with pity, we beseech thee, upon the sorrows of thy servants who are now before thee under thy chastising hand. In thy wisdom thou hast seen fit to visit us with trouble, and to bring distress upon us. Remember us, O Lord, in tender mercy. Sanctify thy fatherly correction to us; endue our souls with firmness and patience under our affliction, and with resignation to thy blessed will, knowing that all things work together for good to them that love thee. Comfort us with a sense of thy goodness; lift up thy countenance upon us, and give us peace, and make it the harbinger of eternal rest.

When a Friend or Member of the Family has gone to Sea.

THOU alone, O Lord, spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea. We commend to thy Almighty protection, thy servant for whose preservation on the great deep our hearts are deeply concerned. Guard him, we beseech thee, from the dangers of the sea, from sickness, from
