visit, and in thine own good time relieve him. Direct to the use of suitable means for his recovery: and bless the application of them. Mitigate the sufferings of his disease ; and dispose him to place all his trust and confidence, not in the help of man, but in thy promises, and power, and love. Be merciful unto him, gracious Lord, not according to our deservings, but according to the necessity of his case, and the multitude of thy mercies. In submission to thy most wise and good disposal of all things, we beseech thee, that this bitter cup may pass away from thy servants, or give us grace so to improve it, as to set us forward on our way to life eternal.
For a Sick Child
Look down from heaven, O gracious Father, we humbly beseech thee, with the eyes of mercy upon the sick child for whom our fears are awakened. Deliver him, O Lord, in thy good appointed time from his bodily pain, and visit him with thy salvation; that if it should be thy good pleasure to prolong his days here on earth, he may live to thee, and be an instrument of thy glory, by serving thee faithfully, and doing good in his generation. Or else, receive him into those heavenly habitations where the souls of those who sleep in the Lord Jesus enjoy perpetual rest and felicity.
For a family in Affliction.
Thou hast taught us, O Lord, in thy holy word, that thou dost not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men. Look with pity, we beseech thee, upon the sorrows of thy servants who are now before thee under thy chastising hand. In thy wisdom thou hast seen fit to visit us with trouble, and to bring distress upon us.
Remember us, O Lord, in tender mercy. Sanctify thy fatherly correction to us; endue our souls with firmness and patience under our affliction, and with resignation to thy blessed will, knowing that all things work together for good to them that love thee. Comfort us with a sense of thy goodness; lift up thy countenance upon us, and give us peace, and make it the harbinger of eternal rest.
When a Friend or Member of the family has
gone to Sea.
Thou alone, O Lord, spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea.
We commend to thy Almighty protection, thy servant for whose preservation on the great deep our hearts are deeply concerned. Guard him, we beseech thee, from the dangers of the sea, from sickness, from
the violence of enemies, and from every evil to which he may be exposed. Conduct him in safety to the haven where he would be, with a grateful sense of thy mercies.
FOR THOSE DAYS UPON WHICH THE LORD'S SUPPER IS TO BE
Prepare us, we beseech thee, by thy grace, for the worthy celebration this day of that holy ordinance, which thy Son was pleased to appoint for a continual remembrance of his death, for a pledge of his love, and for a means of grace, to our great and endless comfort. O may we discern the Lord's body in it, and remember and adore the exceeding love of Christ our Saviour, thus dying for us. Give us repentance unto life, and endue us with a lively faith, a perfect love, and an universal charity. Enable us spiritually to receive the body and blood of Christ our Saviour; that so all carnal affections may die in us, and that all things belonging to the Spirit may live and grow in us; and that, being continually refreshed and strengthened by thy grace, we may persevere in all godliness unto our lives end. May we never forget the vows of God that are upon us ; that being not conformed to this world, but transformed into the likeness of Christ, we may be fit for thine everlasting kingdom.
TO BE USED WHEN ANY CHILD OF THE FAMILY HAS BEEN
Through thy gracious favor a member of this family is this day (or to be) admitted, by baptism, into the Church of Christ, called into a state of salvation, and made thy child by adoption and grace : grant, we beseech thee, that by the continuel help of thy Holy Spirit, he may be enabled to lead the rest of his life according to this beginning; walking uprightly before thee in the true faith of Christ crucified, and finally through the merits of his Redeemer, may he be saved from the wrath to come, and enter into thy glorified Church in heaven.
FOR THE RECOVERY FROM SICKNESS OF ANY MEMBER OF A
WE humbly thank thee, ( gracious and merciful Lord, that thou hast heard the prayers of thy servants; and restoring him who was lately brought low by the visitation of sickness, hast raised him up from the gates of the grave. Thou hast delivered his soul from death, his eyes from tears, and his feet from falling. O Lord, we thank and praise
thee for thy great mercy. Let it be good for us that we have been in sorrow and affliction; while our humble trust in thy mercy is strengthened, teach him and us the uncertainty of this life, and give us grace to fix our hopes upon thy promises of that life which shall be holier and happier.
WHEN A FAMILY HAVE BEEN PRESERVED FROM DANGER.
Thou, O Lord, art a strong tower of defence unto thy servants against the face of their enemies; we yield thee praise and thanksgiving for our deliverance from that great and apparent danger which threatened us. We acknowledge it thy goodness that we are not delivered over as a prey unto it; beseeching thee still to continue such thy mercies towards us, that all the world may know that thou art our Saviour and mighty Deliverer.
FOR A SAFE RETURN FROM SEA.
O LORD, we gratefully acknowledge thy mercy over all thy works; and we praise thy holy name, as for all thy goodness, so especially that thou hast been pleased to conduct in safety, through the
