Most holy, merciful, and gracious Lord God, who art the source and spring of all our comforts here, and the sure and certain foundation of our hopes hereafter look down from heaven, the habitation of thy holiness, upon me, who humbly renew my praises to thy divine Majesty. I acknowledge, that under thy protection I have slept this night securely, and by thy infinite goodness it is, that I am now in health and safety. Praised be thy name, O Lord; let all that is within me praise thy holy name, as long as I live I will magnify thee, O God, for thou art my Creator, my Preserver, and my constant Benefactor. Pardon, most merciful Father, all the unworthy returns I have made for the manifold favors received from thee; and grant me, for the time to come, such a sense of thine infinite goodness, that I may love thee with all my heart, that I may study to please thee in all things, and be afraid of nothing so much as thy displeasure.

Make me truly sensible of the vanity of this world; that I may not be carried away with the force and power of sensible objects, nor brought under the dominion of those lusts which war against the soul. Give me grace so to use the world, as not to abuse it; and grant that neither the cares of this life, nor the deceitfulness of riches, may ever make me neglect the great work thou hast given me to do. Root out of my heart all covetous affections, and let it be my great concern to provide

for eternity, and to lay up a treasure in heaven, which faileth not. Deliver me, O my God, from pride and vain glory; from an uncharitable spirit and malicious temper; and from all those corrupt affections that are so odious in thy sight. But endue me with that wisdom which is first pure, and then peaceable; with that meekness and hu-` mility, which is in thy sight of so great a price, and with all those holy and Christian dispositions that thou delightest in. Make me always mindful of my own frailty, of the uncertainty of this life, and of the eternity of the next. Make me careful so to live, in watching and moderation, in prayer and self-denial, as I shall wish I had done when I come to die: let not sickness or death ever surprise me unawares, or find me in a state unprovided ; but grant that I may finish the great work of my salvation before the night comes, when no man can work. So having laid up a good foundation against the day of trouble, whenever thou shalt call me hence, may I cheerfully resign up my soul into thy hands; and oh! wilt thou vouchsafe to receive it to thy mercy, through the merits, and for the sake of thy dear Son.

Be with me, O Lord, this day; let thy blessing accompany all my honest labors and endeavors; and grant that I may take nothing in hand, speak nothing, think nothing, but what is agreeable to thy blessed will. To thee 1 humbly commend my soul and body, and all that stand in any relation

to me, beseeching thee of thy great goodness, to take us under thy protection, to defend us from all evil, and to lead us into all good. While we are engaged about things temporal, grant that we may not forget the things that are eternal, nor be unmindful of that great account which we must one day give. Leave us not to ourselves, but guard us from those snares and temptations that every where surround us. Conduct us by thy good Spirit through all the affairs and business of this life; that we may at last arrive at that place of everlasting rest which thou hast prepared for those who love and fear thee; through the merits and intercession of thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Our Father, &c.

A Prayer for Friday Evening.

Blessed is he whose unrighteousness is forgiven, and whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth no sin, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

For whilst I held my tongue, my bones consumed away through my daily complaining.

For thy hand is heavy upon me day and night, and my moisture is like the drought in summer.

I will acknowledge my sin unto thee; and mine unrighteousness have I not hid.

I said I will confess my sins unto the Lord; and so thou forgavest the wickedness of my sin.

For this shall every one that is godly make his prayer unto thee, in a time when thou mayest be found; but in the great water floods they shall not come nigh him.

Thou art a place to hide me in; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.

I will inform thee, and teach thee in the way wherein thou shalt go; and I will guide thee with mine eye.

Be ye not like to horse and mule, which have no understanding; whose mouths must be held with bit and bridle, lest they fall upon thee.

Great plagues remain for the ungodly; but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, mercy embraceth him on every side. Be glad, O ye righteous, and rejoice in the Lord; and be joyful, all ye that are true of heart.

Most great, and glorious Lord God, who hast created the heavens and the earth, and all things that are therein; thou upholdest them all by the power of thy word, and the host of heaven praiseth thee. Though thou hatest iniquity with a perfect hatred, yet thou delightest in the ways of mercy.; and not only dost permit, but invite us, miserable creatures, to come to thee.

Drawn by thy gracious invitations and promises, then, O Lord, I lift up my soul unto thee, beseeching thee, in much mercy, to look upon me, and to free me from the burden of my corrupt and sinful inclinations. O cast me not away from thy presence; but for the sake of my Redeemer, receive me graciously to thy mercy; and let the merit of his death and passion atone for all the follies and miscarriages of my life past. Forgive, I beseech

thee, whatever I have done amiss this day, and all my life past, either against thee, my neighbor, or myself. Cleanse me from all my secret and unknown transgressions; and grant, merciful Father, that I may seriously consider the foulness and deformity of sin; and what dreadful threatnings thou hast denounced against it; that I may become a true and sincere mourner for my past sins, and, as far as it is possible, redeem my misspent time, by employing the remainder of my days in thy service, and to thy glory. O make me wise unto salvation, and give me such hatred and abhorrence of sin and iniquity, that I may abstain from every kind and sort of evil.

Give me, O Lord, a new heart, new affections, and new desires; that I may love thee with more sincerity, and serve thee with greater faithfulness than I have ever yet done. Convince me of the vanity and uncertainty of all things here below, and grant that I may make thee my joy and my trust, my guide and my counsellor, and be so delighted with the ways of thy commandments, that one day in thy service may be dearer to me, than a thousand spent in vanity and folly. Teach me, O Lord, so to number my days, that I may apply my heart unto true wisdom: and grant that in the days of health and prosperity, I may consider my latter end, and provide for that great account which I must one day give before the judgment-seat of Christ: that when the hour of my departure shall
