receive Christ Jesus the Lord, into my poor, trembling, guilty soul.

How unworthy am I, Lord, that thou shouldst come under my roof; unworthy to eat the crumbs. that fall under thy table: but thy infinite merits can cover all my unworthiness. I am all frailty, and vanity, and passion; O blot out my whole life, and remember only thine own merits and thy own mercies. Frail and polluted as I am, speak thou the word, and I shall be clean and whole; and my soul shall live and for ever bless thy name. Help my infirmities; quicken my dulness; prepare me for thee; draw me mightily unto thee; bring me into the enjoyment of thee, now in part, as far as I can attain; and hereafter in fulness, as much as my heart shall desire, and that for ever and ever.

Assist me, O Lord, with thy Holy Spirit, in the great duty and service I am about to perform; grant that nothing during all the time of this holy action, may make me unmindful of that reverence and respect, which I owe unto thy divine Majesty, or that affection which becomes the celebration of these holy mysteries. Fill my heart with such an awe of thy presence, as may fix my wandering thoughts, compose my disorderly affections, and stir up my faint and cold desires, that I may feel the power, and taste the sweetness of this divine banquet.

Grant that I may have such a sense of my Saviour's sufferings, as may fill my soul with love

and gratitude towards him for those inestimable benefits he has purchased for me; that I may have such a sight of my sins, which occasioned all his sorrows, as heartily to bewail and detest them; such a faith in that perfect oblation and satisfaction, made upon the cross for the sins of the world, and may so importunately plead the merit of it, in this commemoration of that sacrifice, as to render thee gracious and propitious to me, a miserable sinner; such a conviction of my own weakness and insufficiency, as may procure thy gracious aid and assistance; such longing desires of being made conformable to thy holy will and pleasure, as may transform me into thy divine image, and establish me thy faithful servant all the remaining days of my life, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER AFTER THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD'S SUPPER.

I desire with all my soul to adore and magnify thy name, O Lord God, for all the expressions of thy bounty, particularly for the renewed pledges of thy love in Christ Jesus, which I have received this day; that thou hast admitted me, not only into thy house, but to thy table; and used me as thy friend and the child of thy family. Lord, what is man, that thou art so mindful of him, and the son of man, that thou visitest him! And what am I, one of the most unprofitable and thankless of men,

that the great Lord should deal so graciously with me! O make me to know the things that are freely given me of God; give me a heart deeply sensible of thy mercy, and steadfastly purposing to live to thy glory; that I may show my thankfulness for thy benefits, by obedience to thy precepts. Keep me mindful of the vows of God upon me; and help me to live, as having my holy Redeemer now dwelling in me. And as I have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so enable me to walk in him; to walk in love, as Christ loved us; and to go on in the strength of what I have received from thee, to live unto thee; following after holiness, as being not only brought nigh to, but intimately conjoined with the holy one of God.

Let the crucified body and effused blood of God my Saviour, nourish and sustain my immortal soul unto life eternal. May it be health and recovery under all my weaknesses and infirmities; safety and defence against all the attacks of my spiritual enemies; vigor and strength to all my holy purposes and resolutions; comfort and support under all the afflictions and calamities of life; assistance and direction under all difficulties and doubts; courage and constancy under all dangers and persecutions, especially in times of sickness, and at the hour of death; finally, make it to me the pledge of pardon and peace in this life, mercy and favor at the day of judgment, and a never-fading crown of glory in thy heavenly kingdom.

And O that the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, that sacrifice of himself, which he offered upon the cross, and which I have been this day commemorating at thy table, may atone for all the failings and miscarriages in my preparations and performances. And to him, with the Eternal Father and Holy Spirit, be all thanks, and praise, and honor, and glory, ascribed by me, and by thy whole Church, now and for evermore. Amen.

SOME DEVOUT EJACULATIONS AND ELEVATIONS OF THE SOUL, AFTER RECEIVING AT THE LORD'S TABLE.

Blessing and honor, glory and power, be unto him that sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb. that was slain, for ever and ever.

I give thee most humble and hearty thanks, O Lord, that thou hast admitted me to renew my baptismal covenant with thee, in this holy sacra

ment.

Glory be to thee, O Lord God, that in our extreme need and peril, thou hast made such gracious provision for our souls, and sent thy Son to die for our sins, and to save us who had destroyed ourselves. I bless thee, my God, for the mercies of a Saviour, without which all mercies else would be unavailable. I bless thee, that thou hast not withheld thy Son, thy only Son, from us, but given him to be the propitiation for our sins, and to be the life and food of our souls. I sat down under his

shadow, and his fruit was sweet to my taste, and his banner over me was love. It was love that gave me the Saviour whom I have been receiving, and the opportunity now to come, and rest, and feast my soul upon him. Return to thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. Thy life is given thee at his hands, who forgiveth all thy sins, and healeth all thy infirmities; who not only redeems thee from destruction, but crowns thee with loving kindness and tender mercies.

O Lord Jesus, I give thee my body, my soul, my substance, my friends, my liberty, and my life; dispose of me, and of all that is mine, as it seemeth best to thee, and to the glory of thy holy name. Lord, I am not now mine, but thine; therefore claim me as thy right; keep me as thy charge, and love me as thy child: fight for me when I am assaulted; heal me when I am wounded; and revive me when I am fainting. Grant me, O cious Lord, a pure intention of heart, and a steadfast resolution to despise all vanity; to fight the battle of the Lord manfully, against the world, the flesh, and the devil; to spend my time religiously and usefully; to walk always as in thy presence; to preserve my body and soul in holiness, fit for the habitation of the Spirit of God.

Eternal thanks and praise be unto thee, O blessed God my Saviour, for all thy glorious achievements, in laying the sure foundation of our hope and everlasting consolation. Thou hast loved and redeemed
