any loss or suffering, that can but affect my present enjoyments, as I fear the sin and wickedness that would deprive me of thy everlasting favor. Fill my soul with such veneration of thy glorious Majesty, that I may not venture wilfully to violate thy holy laws, but tremble to dishonor thy name, or to rebel against thy word, or to rest short of what thou requirest at my hand. And grant that thy fear may not only keep under some of my sins, but regulate my whole life, and sway my very heart; that I may do thy will universally and cheerfully, and go on to perfect holiness in the fear of God. May I fear thy name, thy great and holy name, and not blaspheme it; fear thy wrath, and not provoke it; fear thy word, and not neglect nor disobey it. Teach me to fear thy goodness, aud not abuse it; to fear thy omniscience, and not make bold with secret sins, as if thou sawest them not, or wouldst only punish those which the world beholds. O may I fear thy omnipotence, and not strive with my Maker, tempting and defying him in any case; and fear thy justice, and not expose myself to its irreversible decrees, and tremendous penalties. And give me, O my God, the right mixture of fear and faith, to keep me in an even temper, between presuming and despairing; that no crosses or evils may ever cause my faith to fail, or suffer me to sink into such despondency and consternation, as to unfit me for my duty; and that no successes, and fair prospects of worldly good,

may harden me into a presumptuous defiance of thee, nor lift me up into wantonness and stubbornness against thee; but that I may entertain always a reverential regard of thy awful majesty, and a dutiful respect to all thy holy and just commands, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR INCREASE OF GRACE.

O God of all grace, who both quickenest the dead, and after thou hast given life, givest the increase, thy people go from strength to strength, growing in grace, till they appear before thee in glory; but I have been barren and unfruitful among the trees of righteousness. How much am I behind many of thy servants who have not had the helps and advantages which I so long have enjoyed; and how little is it to be seen in my life what great mercy and grace have been extended to me! Forgive me, O my Father, and repair thy holy image in me who have so much dishonored thee, and injured myself. O help me, still more and more, to put off the old man, which is corrupt, according to the deceitful lusts, and to put on the new man, which, after God, is created in righteousness and true holiness. Whatever else I want, Lord, deny me not thy grace, but increase it in me continually; and let all the graces of thy Spirit, that accompany salvation, so flourish in my soul, that the peace of God which passeth all understanding, may keep my heart and mind, through Jesus Christ.

Blessed Saviour, who camest into the world that we might have life, and have it more abundantly, of thy fulness let me receive grace sufficient for me, to make me strong in the Lord, and ready to every good work. My life, my strength, and my Redeemer, leave me not to be stationary, or to decline in my spiritual estate; leave me not under the curse of barrenness, but, as thou dost begin the good work in us, establish, O God, that which thou hast wrought for me, and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die, and cherish all the seeds of grace sown in my heart, that my soul may prosper and increase with the increase of God, abounding in all those fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to thy glory and praise. O my Lord, carry on with power the work of faith and sanctification in my soul; that my sinful corruption, every day, like the house of Saul, may grow weaker and weaker; and thy grace in me, every day, like the house of David, may grow stronger and stronger; till from groaning under sin, the body of this death, I shall triumph over all that opposes and hinders the progress of my spiritual life. O help me to put forth myself with vigor and activity in thy holy ways, and to apply myself faithfully to the performance of thy blessed pleasure, that it may be my desire and joy to approve my heart unto my God, and to know that my ways are pleasing in thy sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR PURITY

O GOD of infinite purity, who hast called us not to uncleanness, but to holiness, and hast promised to none but the pure in heart to see and enjoy thy heavenly kingdom; how shall I, a polluted wretch, appear before thy glorious Majesty, in whose sight even heaven itself is not clean! O most gracious Lord, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from all my sin, in that fountain opened for a guilty and perishing race—the precious blood of the Lamb of God, slain to take away the sins of the world. Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me whole. O create a clean heart in me, and say to my soul, as thou didst to the leper, I will, be thou clean; and I shall be fitted now for thy holy service, and hereafter for thy heavenly glory and felicity. O let me not live after the flesh, lest I eternally die: but, by thy Spirit, so mortify the deeds and propensities of the body, that I may for ever live. Help me my God, to avoid every occasion of falling and backsliding, and to abstain from all appearance of evil. Help me against the power of prevailing iniquities and besetting temptations, and purge away all my sins for the glory of thy name. May the time past of my life suffice to have served my own lusts and pleasures, and let not sin any longer reign in my mortal body, that I should obey it in the lusts thereof; but enable me, O Lord, to cut off even the right hand, and to pluck

out the right eye; to keep under my body, and to bring it into subjection, that I may hereafter overcome the sins that have so often overcome me. O mortify and destroy in me every rebellious motion, and every vicious inclination, that exalts itself against the gospel and government of Jesus Christ. Let me not yield myself the miserable slave of soul-ruining lusts; but demean myself as the wise, faithful follower of my crucified Lord and Master: and as thou who hast called me art holy, so make me holy in all my affections and conversation; so studious of Christian piety and purity that I may see and enjoy the Lord. Gird me with might, to that spiritual conflict wherein I am engaged, not only against flesh and blood, but spiritual foes, too strong for me to deal with; that through Christ. sttengthening me, I may go on, conquering and to conquer, all that withstands thy glory and my salvation, till Satan be bruised under my feet; that nothing may ever be able to separate me from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus my Lord. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR ONE WHO IS PREPARING FOR CONFIRMATION.

Most merciful God, by whose gracious providence, I was born of Christian parents, and early dedicated to thee in holy baptism, wherein I was made a member of the Catholic Church, whereof Jesus Christ is the head; I most heartily thank thee for
