from the enemies of his soul, and finish all that is wanting of the work of thy grace upon his heart; freely and fully pardon and deliver him from all his sins, and accomplish him to appear with comfort and rejoicing in thy blessed presence. O make his departure easy, and full of peace and hope; carry him safely through the dark passage, upon which he is entering, and let him find at the gate of glory, an access into the everlasting kingdom and joy of his Lord. Into thy hands, we commend his spirit. O thou Father of mercies, receive his departing soul; and when he is numbered among the dead, let him also be numbered among the redeemed and blessed of the Lord, for his sake, who himself died for sinners, and rose again, thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HEAR What the voice from heaven declares

To those in Christ who die!

"Releas'd from all their earthly cares,
"They'll reigu with him on high.

Then why lament departed friends,
Or shake at death's alarms?
Death 's but the servant Jesus sends
To call us to his arms.

If sin be pardon'd, we 're secure,
Death hath no sting beside;

The law gave sin its strength and power;
But Christ, our ransom, died!

The graves of all his saints he bless'd,
When in the grave he lay;

And, rising thence, their hopes he rais'd
To everlasting day!

THANKSGIVINGS

FOR PERSONS IN PRIVATE, ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS,

IN ADDITION TO THOSE AT THE END OF THE FAMILY PRAYERS.

THANKSGIVING AFTER A SAFE JOURNEY.

ALL thanks and praise that my soul can render, I owe unto thee, O Lord, my God, for that providential goodness which I have experienced in my journey just accomplished. Thou hast been nigh to me, and watchful over me, not only to secure me from the perils of the way, and from sad accidents that might have befallen me, but hast surrounded me with blessings and comforts on every side. When at every step, I was exposed to distressing evils, and might now have been groaning under broken bones, or bruised limbs, yea, might have been cut off and perished in the way, losing not only property and health, but life itself; thou, Lord, hast in mercy preserved and kept me in safety, and restored me to my habitation in peace, and to my accustomed comforts and privileges.

A vain thing, O Lord, is a horse for safety, and man is the worst foe of man; and nothing upon earth can we confide in to defend us, if thou, the blessed keeper of Israel, do not cover us under the

shadow of thy wings, and give thy angels charge over us, to keep us in all our ways. But such invisible guards I have had; and such favor from the Lord of love I have found. That mercy and goodness of the Lord that has followed me all my life, has been renewed afresh, and further manifested to me in these my travels. O how inexhaustible is thy patience, and kindness, and bounty! To thee, O God of my life, and safety, and comfort, be all the glory. O fill me with a most grateful sense of this thy rich grace and continual mercy; and give me a heart abounding with thankfulness and with thy love and praises. May I never more distrust thy providence, nor thy goodness;-may I never forget my vows and obligations; but give me grace to express the unfeigned thanks of my heart, by a holy, and uniform, and zealous obedience, through my blessed Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Amen.

THANKSGIVING FOR PRESERVATION AND DELIVERANCE FROM DANGERS AND TROUBLES.

MANY, O Lord my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts of mercy which are to us-ward. If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise. I will be glad and rejoice in thee, and sing praise to thy name, O thou Most High. I will praise thee, O Lord, for thou hast

heard me, and art become my salvation. I found trouble and sorrow; then I called upon thee, and thou wast attentive to my cry, and nigh to my help. And though thou mightest have made me an example of thy judgments, as others have been for my admonition, thou didst not consult my deserts but my helplessness and distress; doing great things, and working strange deliverance for me, not because I was worthy, but because thou aboundest in mercy. Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing, for God is my defence, and the fountain of my mercy. O Lord God, merciful and gracious, I will extol thee, who hath exalted me, and not suffered trouble and danger to overwhelm me. In my distress I cried to thee, and thou hast enlarged me. Blessed be God, who hast not cast away my prayer, nor turned his mercy from me. O what shall I say unto thee, whose name is exalted far above all blessings and praise! And what shall I do for thee, to whom my goodness will not extend! I can never answer the obligations which thy love, dear Lord, has laid upon me: but teach and help me to admire, and love, and bless, and praise thee, with all the capacities and abilities which thou hast given me. And O that thou wouldst imprint so deeply upon my heart the sense of such seasonable relief, and wonderful mercy, that I may never forget, never slight, nor abuse the great goodness which I have experienced. May my love and gratitude be manifested all the days of my life.

Let me not become secure and careless, because I have so escaped, but more watchful and diligent, in proportion to the favors and obligations I have received; proving my thankfulness in such a manner, as thou mayest graciously accept, in my blessed Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

A THANKSGIVING FOR THE BEGINNING OF A
RECOVERY.

GREAT and mighty God, who bringest down to the grave, and bringest up again; we bless thy wonderful goodness, for having turned our heaviness into joy, and our mourning into gladness, by restoring this our brother, to some degree of his former health. Blessed be thy name that thou didst not forsake him in his sickness; but didst visit him with comforts from above; didst support him in patience and submission to thy will, and at last, didst send him seasonable relief. Perfect, we beseech thee, this thy mercy towards him; and prosper the means which shall be made use of for his cure: that being restored to health of body, vigor of mind, and cheerfulness of spirit, he may be able to go to thine house, to offer thee an oblation with great gladness. And grant that the talents of time, and ability to do good, which are now afresh committed to his trust, may be, for the time to come, so faithfully improved, that the gifts and graces of a sanctified conversation may hold a due proportion with the blessings he has received. Let these excite not
