O GOD, who hast added to the number of our days; and hast opened our eyes to behold the light of another morning, we beseech thee still to look upon us, and to bless us: show us the light of thy countenance, and be merciful unto us.

Our voice shalt thou hear, O Lord, every morning; for every morning thy mercies towards us are renewed: great is thy faithfulness and truth.

While many, during the past night, have slept the sleep of death, and shall awake no more till the resurrection in the last day, and many, like their Lord and Master, have not found where to lay their heads, Lord, what are we, that thou shouldst be so mindful of us, and so gracious unto us, in saving our life from destruction, and crowning us with loving-kindness and tender mercies! We confess that thou art the Lord by whom alone we have escaped death. And we beseech thee to grant, that, with our restored strength and capacities, we may give up ourselves afresh to thy service. Stir us up to self-examination and reflection, to watchfulness and prayer. Break through our habits of spiritual sloth and negligence; and teach us the duc value of time, while yet we are able to improve it. And we earnestly pray thee, heavenly Father, in whose hands are the issues of life and death, to spare our lives, till the work is finished which thou hast given us to do.

As we enter again upon a world whose principles and fashions are enemies to godliness, grant,

Lord, that we may carry with us, through the influence of thy Gospel, holier desires, and firmer resolutions. With this new week (or new year,) help us to begin a new life. May the faith of our crucified Lord govern all our undertakings, and sanctify all our affections. Thus may we live above the world; and converse and act, in all the relations of life, with a heavenly mind. And while we live in thy holy fear, may we enjoy thy gracious protection. Cover us with the shadow of thy paternal wings: hold us in the hollow of thine Almighty hand, that no evil may come nigh to hurt our bodies or our souls. Keep us mindful of our past infirmities, and of those snares and temptations which have so often caused us to wound our conscience, and grieve thy Holy Spirit. And enable us more carefully to guard our eyes, our thoughts, and lips, lest we should displease thee. Root out of our hearts every unholy passion and propensity; and establish in us, more and more, the dominion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Using this world as not abusing it, and strengthening our hearts with thy holy ordinances, may we daily attain a greater conformity to the spirit of the Gospel, and come nearer to thy blessed kingdom. Enable us to fight manfully the fight of faith; and to endure hardness, as good soldiers of Christ Jesus. Clothe us with thy whole armor, O Lord our God.

We beseech thee, Almighty Lord, who seest that we put not our trust in any thing that we do, mercifully to grant, that, by thy power, we may be defended against all adversity. We look up unto thee for guidance, preservation, and strength. Lead us in the paths of righteousness for thy truth's sake. Keep us in the way in which we should go, and guide us with thine eye. Give unto us eternal life; and let us never perish; neither let any one pluck us out of thy hand. And while we are diligently employed in our several stations, deliver us from all sinful anxiety about the affairs of this present life. May we be careful for nothing; but in every thing, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, make our requests known unto thee. Let thy loving-kindness and mercy follow us all the days of our life. When we pass through the valley of the shadow of death, be thou still with us. Let thy rod and staff comfort and support us. And graciously receive us at the last into thy heavenly fold; there, with thy people and the sheep of thy pasture, to give thee thanks for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

1 Cor. xiii. 1.—Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth. And now abideth, faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

O LORD, the blessed God of our salvation, who art the hope of all the ends of the earth, upon whom the eyes of all do wait; for thou givest unto all life, and breath, and all things; in thee we live, and move, and are; and upon thee we continually depend for all the good that ever we have, or hope for. We thank thee for the assurance of thy word, that if we commit our affairs to thee, and acknow

ledge thee in all our ways, thou wilt establish our thoughts, and direct our path. And therefore we desire, O Lord, still to put ourselves under thy gracious conduct, and thy fatherly protection; we beg the guidance, and blessing, and assistance, of thy good Spirit; to choose our inheritance for us; and to dispose of us, and all that concerns us, to the glory of thy name.

O Lord, withdraw not thy mercies, nor the comforts of thy presence, nor the assistance of thy Spirit, through our great contempt and manifold abuses of such grace. Punish not our past sins, by giving us over to the love and power of them; but give us truly penitent hearts for all the evils committed by us, and thy merciful discharge from all the guilt that lies upon us. And grant us, O God, the comfortable sense and apprehension of thy gracious acceptance of us, and thy merciful intentions towards us in Jesus Christ.

O may we find the joy of the Lord to be our strength, to enable us against our sins, especially the sins to which we are most addicted, and whereof we are in greatest danger. May it make us also more ready to every good work, and better disposed for all the duties of piety, justice, charity, and sobriety, which we owe to thee, to our neighbor, and ourselves, that herein we may exercise ourselves, to have always a conscience void of offence towards God, and towards men. Help us to walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as
