CHART. 20. SULFUR AND PHOSPHORUS-SULFUR FROM TEXAS TO SOUTH CAROLINA COMPARED WITH PHOSPHORUS FROM SOUTH CAROLINA TO TEXAS Sulfur is produced in Texas and shipped molten in tank cars east from Galves ton to Charleston, S. C. Phosphorus is produced in Charleston and shipped in tank cars west to Dallas. The eastbound sulfur is water competitive; the rail rate is $9.57 for 1,099 miles. The westbound phosphorus, to an interior point, pays a rail rate nearly four times as high for the same distance. CHART 21. BENTONITE CLAY-BELLE FOURCHE, S. DAK. TO CHICAGO COMPARED WITH LIMESTONE-PRAIRIE DU ROCHER, ILL. TO BATON ROUGE Both of these commodities are heavy loading, and of low value. Both move in arge volume by railroad for comparable distances. The clay is high-rated at 150. The limestone is low-rated at $2.40. The limestone has water transportation available. The shipper of clay felt so strongly about his rate, he filed a formal complaint ar at the Northwestern Railroad alleging the rate to be unlawfully high. An amber's report proposes to compel the railroad to reduce the rate slightly. =-516-63-pt 1-27 CHART 22. CARBOLIC ACID-HOUSTON TO ST. LOUIS, TOLEDO, AND NEW JERSEY The rail rate for the 774-mile haul to St. Louis is $13.10. To New Jersey, a's served by water, the 1,672-mile rail haul is $23.80. Toledo, only 1,174 from Houston, pays $28.40. CHART 23. GRAIN-ST. LOUIS AND CHATTANOOGA TO SOUTH CAROLINA In the celebrated "Southern Grain Case," the Southern Railway slashed grain rates two-thirds from origins along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers into the theast. But no comparable reductions were made from ports on the TenDessee River. Consequently, under the Southern's proposal, if a barge line moved train free from St. Louis to Chattanooga, the combination barge-rail rate from St. Louis to South Carolina via Chattanooga would be higher than the all-rail rate from St. Louis to South Carolina. CHART 24. SODA ASH-WYOMING AND TEXAS ORIGINS The producer in Houston, marketing his soda ash in St. Louis; pays only 3 for 903 miles of rail service, but the Wyoming producer, selling in Los Aries, has to pay more than twice as much for a little less rail service. CHART 25. COAL-EAST TENNESSEE MINES TO ATLANTA AND TAMPA The powerplant at Tampa pays $3.76 for 802 miles of rail service. The plant at Atlanta must pay $3.96 for only 226 miles. Tampa enjoys the freedom to choose between waterborne coal from west Kentucky or coal from east Tennessee at greatly reduced rail rates. Atlanta has no choice, pays high rates. |
