CHART 26. IRON ORE-MINNESOTA AND BALTIMORE TO YOUNGSTOWN

Iron ore comes out of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota and moves down the lakes to the steel mills in Ohio. A 65-mile rail haul to Duluth costs $1.29 (loading into ship 19 cents). The 882-mile water haul down the lakes to Ashtabula only costs $2 (unloading 52 cents). But the 59-mile haul on to Youngstown Posts $2 08.

By contrast the 378-mile rail haul on import ore from Baltimore to Youngstown costs only $4.08.

CHART 27. STEEL PLATES-ASHLAND, KY., TO EVANSVILLE, IND., AND

GREENSBORO, N.C.

The Southern Railway serves Greensboro, N.C. and also Evansville, Ind. From Ashland, Ky., the rail rate on steel plate is $4.55 for 335 miles, but to Greensboro NC., the rate is $8.90 for 405 miles. Evansville has water transportation ariable from steel mills on the Ohio River. The Southern Railway has no petition to Greensboro.

CHART 28. COAL-MIDWEST MINES TO FLORIDA AND MASSACHUSETTS

West Kentucky coal comes into Tampa by water, so the railroads haul east Kentucky coal to Tampa 770 miles for $3.87. But Worcester, Mass., pays $5.75 to bring coal only 642 miles from West Virginia.

CHART 29. SODA ASH-OHIO AND LOUISIANA TO ST. LOUIS

Soda ash comes into St. Louis 653 miles by rail from Baton Rouge for $5.25. The producer in Painesville, Ohio, selling in St. Louis, must pay a higher rate for a short haul.

CHART 30. GRAIN OREGON AND WASHINGTON TO PORTLAND, OREG.

Portland, Oreg., is an export outlet for western grain. From Medford, Oreg to Portland, the rail rate is $9.60 for 329 miles, but from Connell, Wash. (30 mbes from the river), the rail rate is only $3.70 for 325 miles to Portland, Oreg

CHART 31. GRAIN-NORTH DAKOTA TO MINNEAPOLIS; KANSAS CITY TO CHICAGO; ST. LOUIS TO Chattanooga

Wheat from Minot, N. Dak., pays $10.40 for 470 miles of rail service, compared to 40 from Kansas City to Chicago, 437 miles; or St. Louis to Chattanooga for 468 miles. The distances are about the same, the availability of water rvice is the difference.
