NOTES.

- Mr. Hamlin Garland is discussed in the opening article of the Literary Northwest, by Mrs. Mary J. Reid, and a good half-tone portrait of the young novelist forms the frontispiece of the magazine. Mrs. Reid sketches the Life of Garland tells us of his likes and dislikes and quotes copiously from his sayings.

-The Century publishes an excellent engraving of Alexander's portrait of Thomas Hardy to accompany a sketch of the novelist by Harriet Waters Preston. She asserts that Hardy has only lately since the publication of" Far from the Madding Crowd"- attained any wide popularity, and that he is even yet practically unknown as to his most wonderful qualities "the creative imagination, and the power of picturesque expression, by virtue of which he is really very great indeed, and worthy to rank with the few consuminate masters of English prose romance."

Messrs. D. Appleton & Co. have re-established their Chicago Educational Agency, which was temporarily discontinued after the transfer of their common school text books to another publishing house in 1890. Their office is in the Kimball Building, 243-253 Wabash Avenue, and in charge of Mr. Alfred A. Horn, who will be pleased to renew old acquaintances, and to correspond with teach. ers and educators in all parts of the northwest regarding the supply of their educational works for normal classes and colleges, and standard publications for school libraries.

To the suffering. Ever since I was in camp in 1862, when I caught a severe cold, I have suffered with kidney trouble and pains in my back, and have been unable to do any heavy work. After I had the grip last spring, I had a bad cough, was very weak, in fact my system was completely run down. I tried a bottle of Hood's SarW.J. IF YOU ARE A TEACHER

OF PRIMARY,

INTERMEDIATE,

YOU NEED

OR UNGRADED SCHOOLS

PRIMARY EDUCATION.

The increasing demands on primary teachers for special training in their work and the great variety of helps needed to meet these demands, have led to the establishment of this magazine.

Primary Education

is edited by Eva D. Kellogg, a teacher of long experience in every phase of school work, from the first primary to the management of normal training schools for teachers.

EXHIBIT OF CHILDREN'S WORK. Each number contains an exhibit of the work of primary children from some leading school in the country. This presentation of the actual school-room work of the little ones with all its imperfections, is always appreciated by teachers for its helpfulness in suggestion, and as a means of comparing aims, efforts, and results, with those of other teachers.

Large Pictures for Language Work

In addition to the illustrated lessons and pedagogical articles by leading teachers of the country, a beautiful picture supplement for language work is given with each number. These illustrated supplements present suggestive material, timely to the season, which can be used to great advantage, in observation and language work. They are detached from the paper, so that the teacher can use them without destroying her paper.

To sum it all up, Primary Education is a model school paper for the teacher of primary, intermediate or ungraded schools; at once helpful and inspiring, yet fresh, crisp, original, and alive to the best and broadest educational interests of the day.

As you wished to hear of our experience with the books published by you, Esop's Fables," and "Grimm's Fairy Tales," I write that Æsop is being read with great interest in my lowest grade September children. Though the most difficult reading ever given that grade, they are making a fine success of reading it; their live interest in the matter putting them through difficulties that would wholly stagger them but for such a stimulus. The "Grimm" is being read in my Second Grade (second year) with gratifying success.

Some of my classes in these grades will read these books at sight, with expression and good enunciation. While I do not regard my primary classes as forward in reading, it must be said that the right kind of matter, adapted to children and glowing with interest is a large factor in the success of our work.

As for the " History Stories" my children want to read them all the time.
