Si novi quid fit, meliùs docebit

Sermo pedeftris.

MARRIAGE

OF AN

Old MAI D.

C

By R. F.

HLOE a coquet in her prime, The vaineft fickleft thing alive; Behold the ftrange effects of time!

Marries and doats at forty five.

Thus weather-cocks, who for a while

Have turn'd about with every blaft,
Grown old and deftitute of oil,

Ruft to a point, and fix at laft.

EPITAPH

EPITAPH on the MONUMENT of the Marquis of Winchefter.

H

By Mr. DRYDEN.

E who in impious times undaunted flood,

And midft rebellion durst be just and good;
Whofe arms afferted, and whofe fuff'rings more
Confirm'd the Caufe for which he fought before,
Refts here rewarded by an heavenly prince,
For what his earthly could not recompenfe.
Pray (reader) that such times no more appear,
Or if they happen, learn true honour here.
Ark of thy ages faith and loyalty,

Which (to preferve them) heaven confin'd in thee.
Few fubjects could a king like thine deferve,
And fewer fuch a king fo well cou'd ferve.
Bleft king, bleft fubject, whofe exalted state
By fufferings rofe, and gave the law to fate.
Such fouls are rare; but mighty patterns giv'n'
To Earth, were meant for Ornaments to heav'n.

O fair, fo young, fo innocent, so sweet;

S a to rare fit,
So fair,

So ripe a judgment, and fo rare a wit,

Require at least an age, in one to meet.

In her they met ; but long they could not stay,
'Twas gold too fine to fix without allay :
Heav'ns image was in her fo well expreft,
Her very fight upbraided all the rest.

Too juftly ravifh'd from an age like this;
Now he is gone, the world is of a piece.
