THE proper use of a preface appears to be, to give the reader information which may be useful during the perusal of the work to which it is prefixed and object. to explain its nature As to the nature of the work, it is, I hope, pretty clearly stated in the titlepage; as to the object, it is to preserve in memory the sufferings of our fathers; and as there are but a very few of the original copies of this work in existence, and those few nearly destroyed, it was with great difficulty the publishers could find a perfect copy of the original, as nearly fifty years have passed since its publication.
