T has been afferted by thousands, that " though "there may be fome truth in phyfiognomy, ftill it never can be a fcience." Thefe affer tions will be repeated, how clearly foever their objections may be anfwered, and however little they may have to reply. Phyfiognomy is as capable of becoming a fcience as any one of the fciences, mathematics excepted. It is a branch of the physical art, and includes theology and the belles lettres. Like thefe, it may, to a certain extent, be reduced to rule, and acquire an appropriate character, by which it may be taught."
