It is estimated that the annual production of processed tankage is about 3,000 short tons, and the production of animal tankage about 2,000 short tons. These figures are based on recent consumption statistics. There is no natural sodium nitrate produced commercially in the United States. The total production of synthetic sodium nitrate (all by one company) was about 210,000 short tons a year in 1946-48, 1/ of which 55,000 to 60,000 short tons were produced for agriculture. In 1944 and 1945 the production of synthetic sodium nitrate for agriculture was approximately 100,000 short tons annually. The combined output of miscellaneous nitrogen materials such as cottonseed meal, beet slop, etc., probably comprises an appreciable part of the total domestic production. United States imports.-Imports of nitrogenous fertilizer materials averaged 985,000 short tons, valued at nearly 18 million dollars (foreign value) annually in 1937-39 with an average nitrogen content of 154,000 short tons (see table 1). Imports in 1946-48 averaged 837,000 short tons, valued at more than 27 million dollars, with an average nitrogen content of 145,000 short tons. Sodium nitrate was the principal nitrogenous fertilizer material imported and came chiefly from Chile (see tables 3 and 4). The second most important source of imports of nitrogenous fertilizer materials has been Canada which, together with Chile, accounted for nearly all of United States imports in 1946-48. In 1937-39 Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Germany were important secondary suppliers.
