split, like the continent itself, into two distinct masses; the one embodying the nobler Anglo-American elements of civilisation, and rejecting those evil tendencies in the other that we so much dread. All the great commercial power would then belong to the northern states; and after a real political separation on the grand question of slavery, theirs would be the most powerful possible check to the political principles of the south. Already on the isthmus the Transit Company-a purely commercial interest -has, we know, gained great strength; and that strength would then be the strength of the North-the strength of order and freedom. America might then be a stronger bulwark against America than Great Britain, with or without his "Mosquitan majesty," could ever hope to become.
