3 Is not Thy name melodious still To mine attentive ear?

Doth not each pulse with pleasure bound, My Saviour's voice to hear?

4 Hast Thou a lamb in all Thy flock,
I would disdain to feed?
Hast Thou a foe before whose face
I fear Thy cause to plead?

5 Would not my ardent spirit vie
With angels round the throne,
To execute Thy sacred will

And make Thy glory known?

6 Thou knowest, yea, Thou knowest, Lord; Yet, oh! I long to soar

Far from the sphere of mortal joy,
And learn to love Thee more.

HYMN

III. 3.

L

OVE Divine, all love excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down;
Live in us Thy humble dwelling,
All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation,

Enter every longing heart.

2 Breathe, oh! breathe Thy loving Spirit Into every troubled breast!

Let us all Thy peace inherit,
Let us find Thy promised rest.

Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thine host above;
Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in Thy boundless love.

3 Finish, then, Thy new creation,
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see our whole salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee.
Changed from glory unto glory,

Till in heaven our songs we raise;
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

II. 1.

LOVE Divine, how sweet thou art!
When shall I find my willing heart
All taken up in Thee?

I thirst, I faint, I die to prove
The greatness of redeeming Love,
The love of Christ to me.

2 Stronger His love than death or hell; Its riches are unsearchable;

The first-born sons of light

Desire in vain its depths to see;
They cannot reach the mystery,

The length, and breadth, and height.

3 God only knows the love of God;
O that it now were shed abroad
In this poor stony heart!
For this I sigh; for Thee I pine;
This only portion, Lord, be mine,
Be mine the better part!

4 O might I ever have my seat,
Like Mary at the Master's feet!
Be this my happy choice;
My only care, delight, and bliss,
My joy, my heaven on earth, be this,
To hear the Bridegroom's voice!

5 O that I could, with favor'd John, Recline my weary head upon

The dear Redeemer's breast; From care, and sin, and sorrow free, Give me, O Lord! to find in Thee My everlasting rest!

HYMN

[blocks in formation]

OD of my life, through all its days

My grateful powers shall sound Thy praise,
The song shall wake with opening light,
And warble to the silent night.

2 When anxious cares would break my rest,
And griefs would tear my throbbing breast,
Thy tuneful praises, rais'd on high,
Shall check the murmur and the sigh.

3 When death o'er nature shall prevail,
And all its powers of language fail,
Joy through my swimming eyes shall break,
And look the thanks I cannot speak.

4 But oh when that last conflict's o'er,
And I am chain'd to flesh no more,
With what glad accents shall I rise,
To join the music of the skies!

5 The cheerful tribute will I give,
Long as a deathless soul can live;
A work so sweet, a theme so high,
Demands and crowns eternity!

ESUS! I love Thy charming name,
Tis music to mine ear;

Fain would I sound it out so loud,
That earth and heaven should hear.

2 Yes! Thou art precious to my soul,
My transport and my trust;
Jewels, to Thee, are gaudy toys,
And gold is sordid dust.

3 All my capacious powers can wish,
In Thee doth richly meet;
Not to mine eyes is light so dear,
Nor friendship half so sweet.

4 Thy grace still dwells upon my heart, And sheds its fragrance there; The noblest balm of all its wounds, The cordial of its care.

5 I'll speak the honors of Thy name, With my last lab'ring breath;

Then speechless rest me in Thine arms, And find my life in death.

[blocks in formation]

Y God, my Life, my Love,

M To Thee, to Thee I call;

I cannot live if Thou remove,
For Thou art all in all.

S. M.

2 Thy shining grace can cheer
This dungeon where I dwell;
'Tis paradise when Thou art here;
If Thou depart, 'tis hell.

3 To Thee, and Thee alone,
The angels owe their bliss ;
They sit around Thy gracious throne,
And dwell where Jesus is.

4 Not all the harps above

Can make a heavenly place,
If God His presence but remove,
Or but conceal His face.

5 Nor earth, nor all the sky,
Can one delight afford,
No, not a ray to cheer mine eye,
Without Thy light, O Lord.

6 Thou art the sea of love,

Where all my pleasures roll; The circle where my passions move, And centre of my soul.
