CATTLE AND SHEEP.

We purpose to confine ourselves on the present occasion to that department of agriculture which is engaged in furnishing a supply of animal food to the inhabitants of these realms. Though we trust that we may be pardoned for offering to our readers, almost exclusively, statements and remarks drawn from our personal experience and observation, we hope it will not be supposed that we are indifferent to the rich and interesting literature of contemporary agriculture. Mr. Stephens' "Book of the Farm" (of a new and improved edition of which one volume has just reached us) is only one of several comprehensive Manuals that have been received with very general approbation by the classes best able to judge of their merits. The agricultural magazines published on both sides of the. Tweed may well be referred to with satisfaction, as evidences of the spread of curiosity and speculation as to all questions connected with this great department of national industry; and though neither France nor Germany has of late been sterile in the same line, we believe we may
