PREFACE.

In order to render instantly available to the busy manager, general agent or special agent the essential features of the laws of the various States and Territories relating to fire insurance companies and agents, and the conditions under which they may transact business, the publishers undertook, in 1901, a systematic compilation of the statutes relating to some thirty topics of general interest, copiously indexed, and issued the result under the title of "Fire Insurance Laws, Taxes and Fees." The work evidently met a recognized need, and the subsequent annual volumes, improvements on the first, were accorded a cordial. welcome by the underwriting fraternity. Following the adjournment of the various State and Territorial Legislatures, we present the sixth annual volume, and trust that it will be found even more useful than its predecessors.

The statutory requirements vary so much in the various States that, if the underwriter can have their tenor conveyed to his mind in a few words, there is a saving of time and trouble. There are many of the statutes which are so free from the possibility of misconstruction that they can be digested with little likelihood of deviation from accuracy. These have been briefed down in this book to their lowest terms. There are other provisions which present more difficulty, and perhaps may carry different meanings to different minds. These it has been our purpose to quote in extenso. Thus the general scope of the work is such as to embrace the advantages of both a digest and a reproduction of the statutes.

A feature of this work which is unique is the codification of the system of county and municipal taxes and fees. This, we believe, has never been undertaken for the whole country in any other publication, and the information given therein is apt to be referred to every day. It has been obtained from thoroughly.
