A particularly timely and important announcement is that of "The Merchants and Manufacturers' Directory of the Orient," compiled by R. The illustrations will contain portraits of all those connected with the "Affair."

HARPER & BROTHERS have just issued one of their most important publications of the year-Dr. Sven "Through Asia," by Sven Hedin. Hedin spent the greater part of 1894 in investi1047 gating the climate and glaciers of that compli cated mass, the Paniers. the loftiest height of which is Mus-tagh-ata, rising 25,000 feet. attempted to reach the summit, but was forced to turn back when 20,000 feet was attained. He also made a careful study of the tributaries of the famous Oxus. The succeeding winter was spent at Kashgar, where Dr. Hedin had ample opportunity of observing the curious In 1896 he life of that remote and ancient city. explored the country between the Kashgar and Yarkand rivers, making many corrections on existing maps of that little-known region. He also crossed the dreaded Takla-makan desert between the Yarkand and Khatan rivers, a distance of 200 miles, on which excursion he rearly lost his life. Later he recrossed the desert to the river Tarim, then to Lop-nor Khotan, through the Kiven-leen mountains and Tsaidam to Koko-nor, and thence through Alaskan and the Ordos country across the Hwang-ho river to Peking, whence he made his way home by Siberia. This most important journey of exploration is interestingly described and very fully illustrated. In "Old Chester Tales will be found eight of the delightful stories Margaret Deland wrote for Harper's Magazine during the past year or two. They are illustrated by Howard Pyle.

D. APPLETON & Co. will publish immediately the first volume of a new edition of Herbert Spencer's "Biology," which work the author has subjected to a severe critical revision.

J. B. LIPPINCOTT Co. have just published an interesting volume entitled "Charles Lamb and the Lloyds." It comprises newly discovered letters of Lamb, Coleridge, the Lloyds, and others. The whole is edited by E. V. Lucas, who says of the twenty new letters by Lamb, here brought to light, after lying hidden for eighty years, that some of them are worthy to rank with his best. The volume contains four portraits, of Lamb, Coleridge, Charles and Sophia Lloyd, and a facsimile of a letter from Lamb to Charles Lloyd.

The time is 1861. The most notable historic character in the story is Lieutenant William Nelson, of the United States Navy, who asked permission to raise ten regiments of Kentucky troops, and who established a recruiting camp near Danville. The real hero is Fred Shackelford. The story tells how young Shackelford conveyed a message to Louisville, and of the part played by his cousin Calhoun Pennington, who ar rayed himself on the side of the Confederacy. He was the intimate associate of Tennyson, Browning, William Morris, Rossetti, Meredith, and Swinburne, and has studied carefully the of these notable men figure under a thin disguise in thoughts of the leading men of the century the book. The plot turns upon a curse pronounced by the father of the hero upon any one who should steal from his grave a diamond and ruby cross. The power of superstition, life among a specially enlightened clan of gypsies, and art theories of the pre-Raphaelite school, play an important part in a novel addressed to a cultured, well-read public.
