THE REV. JOHN HARRIS.

THIS amiable and singularly gifted minister of the gospel, who has scarcely yet reached the prime and vigour of his days, was born at Ugborough, in the county of Devon, in the year .1804. Having in his youth experienced the decisive influence of religion on his own heart, he was led, at the age of nineteen, to consecrate his life to the service of his Saviour in the work of the Christian ministry. With this end in view, he entered, in 1823, as a student at Hoxton College. Here he pursued with exemplary diligence, and with increasing experience of the benign influence of Divine truth on his own mind, those studies which were deemed best adapted to enable him, under the blessing of the Most High, to discharge with efficiency and success the grave and important duties of the sacred vocation he had chosen. Having fulfilled his academic course, Mr. Harris, in the year 1827, entered upon the duties of the pastoral office at Epsom, in Surrey. In the sphere in which he commenced he has faithfully and uninterruptedly continued his ministerial labours, with increasing satisfaction and advantage to an affectionate people, and not without encouraging tokens of the Divine approbation.

For a long time the labours of Mr. Harris rarely extended beyond the boundaries of his pastoral charge; and the influence of those rare gifts with which the great Head of the church has so richly endowed him, was confined to the scene of his stated ministerial engagements, and its immediate neighbourhood; but within the last two years his services in the pulpit have been sought on the most important public occasions, by Christians
