THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY; with Memoirs. 5 Volumes, Imperial Octavo, £1. 12s. each, neatly bound in cloth. Each volume (which may be taken separately) contains Thirty-six Portraits, engraved in the highest style, from Original Paintings, in the possession of her Majesty, the Nobility, Public Bodies, &c. &c.

"Few literary undertakings have ever established a better claim to public patronage than this. As an attendant upon the national history, it is inestimable. It gives to the perusal of our eventful annals an interest a hundred-fold greater than that which they possess without such an auxiliary.”—Morning Herald.

"The collection will go down to posterity a monument of the mighty and diversified power of intellect which throbbed in Britain during our day. What a tumultuous flood of proud emotions sweep through the breast, as we turn from one illustrious effigy to the other! Finally, the work is as extraordinary in regard to cheapness, as to the elegance of its execution."-Court Journal.

MEMOIR OF THE LATE ROWLAND HILL, M. A. By WM. JONES, Author of "Testamentary Counsels ;" and a Preface by the Rev. JAMES SHERMAN, Mr. Hill's successor at Surrey Chapel.-Cloth, 8s. "This is the third Memoir that has appeared of the excellent and eccentric Rowland Hill, and it is certainly written by an individual whose views far more nearly correspond with those of the subject of it than either of the former. It is recommended by the Rev. James Sherman, successor of Mr. Hill at Surrey Chapel, who says 'This third memoir, as far as 1 am capable of judging from fifteen years' acquaintance with the subject, contains a faithful and impartial portrait of his whole character a description of his real sentiments, from his own published works, and an account of the history, discipline, and institutions of Surrey Chapel, not to be found in the works referred to'-the other two memoirs."-Leeds Mercury.

"As thousands of professors in the different sections of the Christian Church will feel a strong inclination to obtain a somewhat minute acquaintance with the late Rowland Hill, we feel no hesitation whatever in directing their attention for this purpose to the memoir of Mr. Jones, (published by Fisher & Co.) in preference to any of its predecessors. We think no comparison can be instituted between them."Methodist New Connexion Mag.

UTILITY OF THE WORK.

I.-It shews, that in all times the spirit of the wicked one has been exerted against the truth of God, which furnishes a manifest proof of the excellence of that truth. II. That the true religion so fortified its genuine professors by the consolations it imparted, that they counted not their lives dear unto them, so that they might continue to enjoy the approbation of their God.

III. That irreligion and infidelity, having no means whereby they can overthrow the truth, unite to impede its progress by the destruction of its adherents. IV. That true religion will flourish where nothing else can grow; and its having continued to prevail, even in the midst of racks and tortures, as well as to support its professors under them, is a manifest proof of its divine origin.

Now in order to shew the value of these blessings to the remotest posterity, let every Protestant father have a Martyrology, in which he shall carefully teach his children to read, that they may embrace and hold fast the benevolent religion of the Lord Jesus, and abhor that which, under any form or name, would waste the substance, bind the conscience, darken the understanding, degrade the mind, and destroy the soul. From every species of tyranny, cruelty, and oppression, may God in his mercy preserve these nations, and deliver all mankind, for ever and ever! Amen. The Editor.
