THE following work is, in the main, the substance of lectures delivered to students in the University of Oxford during the past ten years. Its publication is due, partly, to the request of pupils, but chiefly, to the fact that several scholars, to whom parts of it had been submitted in manuscript, expressed such favourable opinions of the work that I was encouraged to believe its publication would meet a real want.

The only grammar of Persian that has appeared in England since the year 1860 is that of Forbes; and of that work it may be said, without undue depreciation, that it is now behind the age. The flood of light that has been recently thrown on the forms and structure of the Persian language by the researches of scholars in Pehlevi, Old Persian, and Zend, has enabled me to correct many notions that were erroneous, and to add much that is useful for the study of Persian literature. There are, I believe, few chapters in the present work which do not contain something that is new. I would instance, in particular, the treatment of (1) the plurals
