The Nine reply'd,The caufe we tell, "You know friend Úrban's manner well, He loves by hints, in modeft guife, Without parade to make men wife. What others wou'd with pride display, 'He offers in an humble way, 'And ushers what full well he knows With--we should think-perhaps-juppofe. Thus, meeting TIME the other day, '(He knew that TIME had lost his way) Friend TIME,fays he,will not thatSTILE Increase your journey half a mile? Suppofe this new rais'd path you try TIME kept his way, nor deign'd reply: Friend Urban neither rav'd nor fretted, Nor much his loft advice regretted :

TIME came again before 'twas long,

"The Nine fhall view with joyful eyes, "And HIST'RY fnatch th' important prize:

"To thee fhall future ages owe "Whate'er of this they chance to know: "To live fhall be thy happy lot, “When all thy rivals are forgot."

But ftarting fuddenly he hear'd

A voice which he himself revere'd: "Plod in that beaten track no more,It cry'd- his purpofe TIME forebore; 'He turn'd, as Urban had advis'd,

burns the lamp ?-'twill out, we [cry!

Recover it can never;

But a new stock of oil fupply,
And bright it burns as ever.

Your oyl, 'twas talkt, wou'd foon be spent,
Some, what they wifh, will fay:
When more your correfpondents fent,
Then how you blaz'd away!.

Left in your Supplement you glimmer,
For lack of oyl to fhine,
Look to your lanp, and nicely trim her,
And ule this drop of mine!
Trim too thy lamp of life as clear!

Let Virtue oy lupply!
