Gen. xxii. 11, 15. The meffenger of the Lord called to Abraham out of heaven: comp. ver. 1.

Deut. xxxii. 40. For I lift up my hand to heaven, and fay, I live for ever; i. e. I sware by myself. Comp. Gen. xiv. 22; Dan. xii. 7; Heb. vi. 13, 14. 1 Sam, v. 12. And the cries of the city (Ekron) came up to heaven.

1 Kings viii. 22. Solomon ftood by the altar of Jehovah, and spread forth his hands towards heaven. Comp. Exod. ix. 33; Ezra ix. 5; Ifai. i. 15.

54. Solomon arofe from kneeling with his hands spread up to heaven.

1 Chron. xxi. 26. God answered David from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt-offerings. See on 2 Chron vii. 1.

vii. 1. When Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and confumed the burnt-offering; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. See ver. 2, 3. Comp. Levit. ix. 24; 1 Kings xviii. 38; 1 Chron. xxi. 26.

2 Chron. xxxii. 20. Ifaiah prayed, and cried to heaven.

SECTION VII.

HEAVEN, denoting the Inhabitants of Heaven, or a Personification of the Firmament.

DEUT. iv. 26; xxx. 19; xxxi. 28. I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day. See Hofea ji. 21.

xxxii. 1. Give ear, O heavens, and hear, O earth. Comp. Pf. xcvii. 8.

1 Chron. xvi. 31. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice.

Job xv. 15. The heavens are not clean in his fight. Comp. ver. 14, 16; and iv. 18.

Ps. I. 4. God fhall call to the heavens from above; ver. 6, the heavens fhall declare his righteousness.

Ixix. 34. Let the heaven and earth praise him. lxxxix. 5. The heavens shall praise thy wonders, OLord.

xcvi. 11. Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth be glad.

cxlviii. 4. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens.

Ifa. i. 2. Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth. See Bishop Lowth's note.

xliv. 23. Sing, O ye heavens, for Jehovah hath done it; fhout, ye lower parts of the earth; break

SECTION VIII.

HEAVEN, UNDER HEAVEN, END OF HEAVEN, &c. signifying a Nation, or the Earth.

GEN. vi. 17. A flood to destroy all flesh from under heaven, and every thing on the earth. Parallel phrases.

vii. 19. The high hills under the whole heaven were covered.

Deut. ii. 25. I will put the dread and fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven. iv. 19. Which thy God hath divided (or imparted) unto all nations under the whole heaven.

32. Afk from the one fide of heaven unto the other: that is, from one end of the earth to the other.
