Oh! what a glorious thing
Sin's weary load to bring,
And lose it while we sing-

Jesus is here!

5 Oft as I come and

go

Jesus is here;

His presence well I know—

Jesus is here.

Sometimes I seem to stand

'Rapt in the radiant land,
Singing with the sinless band,

Jesus is here.

6 All, then, to Jesus now

24

Jesus is here;

All 'round him joyous bow

Jesus is here.

Soon we shall reach the shore,
Where we shall praise him more,
Singing ever, evermore-

Jesus is here.

L. M.

1 JESUS, where'er thy people meet
There they behold thy mercy-seat;
Where'er they seek thee, thou art found,
And every place is hallowed ground.

2 For thou, within no walls confined,
Inhabitest the humble mind;

Such ever bring thee where they come, And, going, take thee to their home.

3 Dear Shepherd of thy chosen few!
Thy former mercies here renew;
Here, to our waiting souls, proclaim
The sweetness of thy saving name.

4 Here may we prove the power of prayer,
To strengthen faith and sweeten care;
To teach our faint desires to rise,
And bring all heaven before our eyes.

;

1 FROM every stormy wind that blows,
From every swelling tide of woes,
There is a calm, a safe retreat;
'Tis found beneath the mercy-seat.
2. There is a place where Jesus sheds
The oil of gladness o'er our heads
A place than all beside more sweet,
It is the blood-stained mercy-seat.
3 There is a spot where spirits blend,
Where friend holds fellowship with friend;
Though sundered far, by faith we meet
Around our common mercy-seat.

4 Ah, whither could we flee for aid,
When tempted, desolate, dismayed;
Or how the hosts of hell defeat
Had suffering saints no mercy-seat?

5 There, there on eagle-wings we soar,
And time and sense seem all no more,
And heaven comes down our souls to grect,
And glory crowns the mercy-seat.

1 LORD God, the Holy Ghost,
In this accepted hour,
As on the day of Pentecost,
Descend in all thy power.

2 We meet with one accord
In our appointed place,
And wait the promise of our Lord,
The Spirit of all grace.

3 Like mighty rushing wind
Upon the waves beneath,

Move with one impulse every mind;
One soul, one feeling breathe.

4 The young, the old inspire

With wisdom from above;

And give us hearts and tongues of fire,
To pray, and praise, and love.

5 Spirit of Light, explore

27

And chase our gloom away,

With lustre shining more and more
Unto the perfect day.

Tune-"Azotus."

1 GOD of pity, God of grace,

When we humbly seek thy face,
Bend from heaven thy dwelling-place;
Hear, forgive, and save.

2 When we in thy temple meet, Spread our wants before thy feet, Pleading at the mercy-seat;

Look from heaven and savc.

3 When thy love our hearts shall fill, And we long to do thy will, Turning to thy holy hill;

Lord, accept and save.

4 Should we wander from thy fold,
And our love to thee grow cold,
With a pitying eye behold;
Lord, forgive and save.

5 Should the hand of sorrow press,
Earthly care and want distress.
May our souls thy peace possess ;
Jesus, hear and save.
6 And, whate'er our cry may be,
When we lift our hearts to thee,
From our burden set us free;

28

Hear, forgive, and save.

1 SPIRIT Divine, attend our prayers, And make this house thy home; Descend with all thy gracious powers; Oh, come, Great Spirit, come!

2 Come as the light-to us reveal
Our emptiness and woe;

And lead us in those paths of life
Where all the righteous go.

3 Come as the fire-and purge our hearts Like sacrificial flame;

Let our whole soul an offering be
To our Redeemer's name.

4 Come as the dove-and spread thy wings, The wings of peaceful love;

And let thy church on earth become
Blest as the church above.

[blocks in formation]

1 BLEST hour! when mortal man retires
To hold communion with his Lord,
To send to heaven his warm desires,
And listen to the sacred word.

2 Blest hour! when God himself draws nigh, Well pleased his people's voice to hear, To hush the penitential sigh,

And wipe away the mourner's tear.

3 Blest hour! for where the Lord resorts,
Foretastes of coming bliss are given,
And mortals find his earthly courts
The house of God-the gate of heaven.

4 Hail, peaceful hour! supremely blest,
Amid the hours of worldly care;
The hour that yields the spirit rest,
That sacred hour-the hour of
prayer.
