1 COME, thou Desire of all thy saints, Our humble strains attend;

While, with our praises and complaints,
Low at thy feet we bend.

2 When we thy wondrous glories hear,
And all thy sufferings trace,
What sweetly awful scenes appear!
What rich, unbounded grace!

3 How should our songs, like those above, With warm devotion rise!

How should our souls, on wings of love,
Mount upward to the skies.

4 But ah! the song, how cold it flows!
How languid our desire!

How faint the sacred passion glows,
Till thou the heart inspire!

5 Come, Lord, thy love alone can raise
In us the heavenly flame;

31

Then shall our lips resound thy praise,
Our hearts adore thy name.

C. M.

1 MY God, how wonderful thou art!
Thy majesty how bright!
How radiant thy mercy-seat
In depths of shining light!

2 How beautiful, how beautiful
The sight of thee must be-

Thine endless wisdom, boundless power,
And awful purity.

3 And I may love thee, O my Lord!
Almighty as thou art;

For thou hast stooped to ask of me
The love of my poor heart.

4 No earthly father loves like thee;
No mother half so mild

Bears and forbears, as thou hast done
With me, thy sinful child.

5 Father of Jesus, God of love,
What rapture will it be,

32

Prostrate before thy throne to lie,
And ever gaze on thee!

C. M.

1 DEAR Lord, I often cannot pray,
My feeling is not free,

And strange and rude distractions come,
And force my thoughts from thee.

2 I cannot pray; yet, Lord, thou know'st The pain it is to me

To have my vainly struggling thoughts
Thus torn away from thee.

3 Ah! had I watched through every hour O'er tongue, and eye, and ear,

Had I resisted all the day

False joys as they came near;

4 Had I, dear Lord, no pleasure found But in the thought of thee,

Prayer would have come unsought, and been
A truer liberty.

5 Yet thou art oft most present, Lord,
In weak distracted prayer;

A sinner out of heart with self
Most often finds thee there.

6 And prayer that humbles, sets the soul
From all illusions free,

And teaches it how utterly

33

Dear Lord! it hangs on thee.

8.7.

1 GRACIOUS Saviour, thus before thee,
With our varied want and care;
For a blessing we implore thee,
Listen to our evening prayer!
By thy favour safely living,
"With a grateful heart we raise
Songs of jubilant thanksgiving;
Listen to our evening praise!

2 Through the day, Lord, thou hast given
Strength sufficient for our need;
Cheered us with sweet hopes of heaven,
Helped and comforted indeed.
Lord, we thank thee, and adore thee
For the solace of thy love;
And rejoicing thus before thee,
Wait thy blessing from above.

1 COME, my soul, thy suit prepare,
Jesus loves to answer prayer;
He himself has bid thee pray,
Therefore will not say thee nay
2 Thou art coming to a King;
Large petitions with thee bring
For his grace and power are such,
None can ever ask too much.

3 With my burden I begin;
Lord remove this load of sin;
Let thy blood, for sinners spilt,
Set my conscience free from guilt.
4 Lord, I come to thee for rest;
Take possession of my breast;

35

There thy blood-bought right maintain,
And without a rival reign.

7's.

1 LORD, I cannot let thee go,
Till a blessing thou bestow;
Do not turn away thy face,
Mine's an urgent pressing case.
2 Once a sinner near despair,
Sought thy mercy-seat by prayer ;
Mercy heard, and set him free;
Lord, that mercy came to me.

3 Many days have passed since then,
Many changes I have seen ;

Yet have been upheld till now;
Who could hold me up but thou?
4 Thou hast helped in every need;
This emboldens me to plead ;
After so much mercy past,

Canst thou let me sink at last?

5 No, I must maintain my hold,
'Tis thy goodness makes me bold;
I can no denial take,

36

When I plead for Jesus' sake.

8.7.

1 WE were lost but God has found us,
God, who seeks and saves the lost;
Let us pray for those around us,
Thousands by the world engrossed;
Though they seem from God to fly,
God has power to bring them nigh.
2 Lord, behold the sinner wandering,
Far from thee and far from peace,
All his precious substance squandering
In pursuit of earthly bliss;

Show him, Lord, that none can be
Truly blessed till brought to thee.

3 Let thy word go forth with power,
Spread abroad "the joyful sound,"
Oh! our light, our strength, our power,
Make thy glory known around;
Let the truth's resistless force
Stop the sinner in his course.
