Most of the pieces in the present volume have been written in the sacred light of his evening fire-side, and often when his little children have been sitting on his knees. He claims nothing more for them than that which has already been granted for his former publications, the humble merit of originality and simplicity. Having received a small talent from the great Giver of all, he feels it to be his duty to employ it for His glory and humbly give it back to Him. Many of the pictures, both in the blank verse and also in the smaller poems, are not mere imaginary paintings, but real facts and living incidents in the brief history of his life.
