ENGLISH ANNUAL,

FOR

MDCCCXXXVI.

Whoever thinks a faultless piece to see,
Thinks what ne'er was, nor is, nor e'er shall be.
In every work regard the writer's end,
Since none can compass more than they intend;
And if the means be just, the conduct true,
Applause, in spite of trivial faults, is due.

POPE. ESSAY ON CRITICISM.

PUBLISHED BY EDWARD CHURTON,

ADVERTISEMENT.

In consequence of certain facilities which the Proprietor of the English Annual exclusively enjoys, he is enabled to offer the present volume in a form considerably larger and cheaper than similar publications, and in all respects equal to them in its graphic and literary contents. These, however, it is considered necessary to state are a reprint from a popular periodical.

Two volumes of the English ANNUAL have been already extensively but exclusively circulated in France, Germany, and America, and the great success which the work has met with abroad has encouraged the proprietor to publish the present volume in this country.
