Essay on Burns, Scott

and Boswell

I V

The Crowell edition is probably the best inexpensive edition for public libraries. It compares favorably with the Sterling edition published by Estes. The latter is cheaper in appearance, the volumes are awkward in size, and the contents are not well arranged.

The illustrated cabinet edition published by Estes is a very desirable edition. The name of the editor guarantees its value, so far as arrangement and annotations are concerned. The volumes are convenient in size and attractive in appearance.

The edition published by Funk at $54.00 is not recommended to public libraries.

Those who prefer specially imported books have a wide range of choice between Chapman and Hall's Chelsea edition and their library edition.

All of the most desirable of the Chapman and Hall editions have been brought out in this country by Charles Scribner's Sons. The New Edinburgh is a thin paper edition, very good for private libraries. The Edinburgh edition is beautiful and desirable in every respect for those to whom the price is not prohibitive.

The People's edition is the least to be desired. The type is worn and the volumes look old.

The Centenary edition is to be preferred above all others for public libraries. The cost is a little less than the Illustrated cabinet edition. The volumes are larger than those of the latter edition, but the paper is so light in weight that they are delightful to handle. The edition is satisfactory in every way.

For those who do not desire Carlyle's complete works, the volumes published by Dent are recommended.

The list comprises books of 1906 and 1907 with a few previously issued.

So far as possible the year of publication of all books not issued in 1907 is given.

The list prices are given. A considerable reduction from these prices can be obtained.

The previous numbers of these book lists will be sent upon application.

Any foreign books listed will be obtained.

Librarians, book committees and individuals are invited to make inquiries about any of these books. A statement of their value for libraries or for individuals will be given.

Correspondence with reference to organization, classification and other library interests is invited.

If any library desires to make exchange of books on its shelves with other libraries, a list of the books to be exchanged may be sent to this office. Here the list will be manifolded and distributed to all libraries organized under the state law. In this way exchange may be effected by correspondence of libraries interested.

The books in this list are numbered. Succeeding lists will also be numbered consecutively with this.

Any individuals, libraries, or schools desiring lists of maps or suitable books for school libraries or for the reading of children will receive such lists upon application to the public library committee.

The public library committee will be glad to furnish to any person with proper credentials a house library. A blank will be provided so that applicants can conveniently give facts that will help in selecting useful books. If specific books other than fiction are asked for they will be sent so far as practicable. If any family or collection of families wishes to study some particular subject, books upon that subject will be sent.

The attention of teachers and farmers is particularly invited to this proposal.

The committee will be glad to know whether libraries receive this list.
