the Communion with the Priest every Sunday at the least,
except they have a reasonable cause to the contrary. (5.) And to take away all occasion of dissention and superstition,
which any Person hath or might have concerning the Bread and Wine, it shall suffice that the Bread be such as is usual to be eaten, but the best and purest Wheat Bread that conve
niently may be gotten. (6.) And if any of the Bread and Wine remain unconsecrated,
the Curate shall have it to his own use ; but if any remain of that which was consecrated, it shall not be carried out of the Church, but the Priest, and such other of the Communicants as he shall then call unto him, shall immediately after the Blessing,
reverently eat and drink the same. (7.) The Bread and Wine for the Communion shall be provided
by the Curate and the Churchwardens, at the charges of the
Parish. (8.) And note, that every Parishioner shall communicate at the
least three times in the year, of which Easter to be one. And yearly at Easter every Parishioner shall reckon with the Parson, Vicar, or Curate, or his or their deputy or deputies ; and pay to them or him all Ecclesiastical Duties, accustomably
due, then and at that time to be paid. (9.) After the Divine Service ended, the money given at the
Offertory shall be disposed of to such pious and charitable uses, as the Minister and Churchwardens shall think fit. Wherein if they disagree, it shall be disposed of as the Ordinary shall appoint.
RUBRICS AND CANONS OF THE
CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
1. RESPECTING THE DUTY OF THE CONGREGATION
IN PUBLIC WORSHIP.
GENERAL Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister, all kneeling.–Rubric before the Confession in Morning and Evening Prayer.
Then shall this general Confession be made in the name of all those that are minded to receive the Holy Communion, by one of the Ministers ; both he and all the people kneeling humbly on their knees and saying.–Rubric before the Confession in the Order of Holy Communion.
Then the Minister shall kneel and say the Lord's Prayer with an audible voice ; the people also kneeling, and repeating it with him, both here and wheresoever else it is used in Divine Service.-Rubric before the Lord's Prayer in Morning and Evening Prayer.
Then the Minister, Clerks, and People shall say the Lord's Prayer with a loud voice.-Rubric shortly after the Apostles' Creed.
Then shall the Priest and the People with him say the Lord's Prayer.- Rubric before the Lord's Prayer in the Litany.
Then shall the Priest say the Lord's Prayer, the people repeating after him every petition.-Rubric before the Lord's Prayer in Post Communion.
Then shall be sung or said the Apostles' Creed by the Minister and the People standing.--Rubric before the Apostles' Creed.
Upon these feasts, Christmas-day, &c. &c. shall be sung or said this Confession of our Christian faith, commonly called the Creed of St. Athanasius, by the Minister and People standing.–Rubric before Creed of St. Athanasius.
“AMEN” AND OTHER ANSWERS. The People shall answer here, and at the end of all other Prayers, Amen.—Rubric after the Absolution in Morning and Evening Prayer.
THE XVIII. CANON OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
A reverence and attention to be used within the Church in time
of Divine Service. In the time of Divine Service, and of every part thereof, all due Reverence is to be used, for it is according to the Apostle's rule, Let all things be done decently and according to order ; ariswerably to which Decency and Order we judge these our Directions following ; No man shall cover his Head in the Church or Chapel, in the time of Divine Ser
vice, except he have some Infirmity ; in which case let him wear a Night-cap or Coif. All manner of Persons then present shall reverently kneel upon their Knees, when the general Confession, Litany, and other Prayers are read : and shall stand up at the saying of the Belief, according to the Rules in that behalf prescribed in the Book of Common Prayer and likewise when in time of Divine Service the Lord Jesus shall be mentioned, due and lowly Reverence shall be done by all Persons present, as it hath been accustomed ; testifying by these outward Ceremonies and Gestures, their inward humility, Christian Resolution, and due acknowledgment, that the Lord Jesus Christ, the true eternal Son of God, is the only Saviour of the World, in whom alone all the Mercies, Graces, and Promises of God to Mankind, for this Life, and the Life to come, are fully and wholly comprised. None, either Man, Woman, or Child, of what calling soever, shall be otherwise at such times busied in the Church, than in quiet attendance to hear, mark, and understand that which is read, preached, or ministered ; saying in their due places audibly with the Minister, the Confession, the Lord's Prayer, and the Creed ; and make such other Answers to the Public Prayers, as are appointed in the Book of Common Prayer ; neither shall they disturb the Service, or Sermon, by walking or talking, or any other way ; nor depart out of the Church, during the time of Service, or Sermon, without some urgent or reasonable Cause.
! II. RESPECTING THE RECEIVING OF THE HOLY
COMMUNION. In Cathedral and Collegiate Churches and Colleges where there are many Priests and Deacons, they shall all receive the Communion with the Priest every Sunday at the least, except they have a reasonable cause to the contrary.—Fourth Rubric after the Order of the Holy Communion.
Note, that every parishioner shall communicate at the least three times in the year, of which Easter to be one.-Eighth Rubric after the Order of the Holy Communion.
THE XXI. CANON OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
The Communion to be Thrice a Year received. In every Parish Church and Chapel, where Sacraments are to be administered within this realm, the Holy Com
munion shall be administered by the Parson, Vicar, or Minister, so often, and at such times as every parishioner may communicate at the least thrice in the year, (whereof the feast of Easter to be one,) according as they are appointed by the Book of Common Prayer. Provided, That every Minister, as oft as he administereth the Communion, shall first receive that Sacrament himself. Furthermore, no Bread or Wine newly brought shall be used ; but the first words of Institution shall be rehearsed, when the said Bread and Wine be present upon the Communion Table. Likewise, the Minister shall deliver both the Bread and the Wine to every Communicant severally.
THE XXIII. CANON.
Students in Colleges to receive the Communion Four times a
Year at the least. In all Colleges and. Halls within both Universities, the Masters and Fellows, such especially as have any pupils, shall be careful that all their said pupils, and the rest that remain amongst them, be well brought up, and thoroughly instructed in points of religion, and that they do diligently frequent public Service and Sermons, and receive the Holy Communion ; which we ordain to be admi. nistered in all such Colleges and Halls the first or second Sunday of every month, requiring all the said Masters, Fellows, and Scholars, and all the rest of the Students, Officers, and all other the servants there, so to be ordered, that every one of them shall communicate four times in the year at the least, kneeling reverently and decently upon their knees, according to the order of the Communion Book prescribed in that behalf.
THE CXII. CANON.
Non-Communicants at Easter to be presented. The Minister, Churchwardens, Quest-men, and Assistants of every Parish Church and Chapel, shall yearly, within forty days after Easter, exhibit to the Bishop or his Chancellor the names and surnames of all the Parishioners, as well men as women, which being of the
of sixteen years received not the Communion at Easter before.
FORM OF PRIVATE PRAYER.
Prayer to be used daily, after public notice is given for
Confirmation. O Almighty God, I beseech thee graciously to look upon me, thy servant, who am now called by thy Providence to be a partaker of the holy rite of Confirmation.
1 yield Thee most humble and hearty thanks that Thou hast vouchsafed to regenerate me by Water and the Holy Ghost ; to receive me into covenant with Thee ; and to make me a Member of Christ, a Child of God, and an inheritor of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Fill my mind, I beseech Thee, with a lively sense of these thine inestimable benefits ; and give me grace duly to remember what a solemn vow, promise, and profession, I made by my Godfathers and Godmothers in my Baptism, and am now about to ratify and confirm in my own person, in the presence of Thee, the all-seeing God, and of thy Holy Church ; so that coming with meek heart and due reverence to this sacred ordinance, I may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction : and may be endued with power from on high to resist the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and to continue thy faithful soldier and servant to my life's end. Let thy Fatherly hand be ever over me ; thy Holy Spirit ever with me : and so lead me in the knowledge and obedience of thy Word, that I may attain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.
