WEST RIDING SKETCHES.

BY THE SAME AUTHOR.

A Second and Cheaper Edition will shortly be published of

PHASES OF BRADFORD LIFE.

BY JAMES BURNLEY.

"This volume is a reprint of papers which have appeared in a local paper. Perhaps we may be allowed to say that they do it considerable credit. The 'Phases' are photographs, not always very agreeable-photographs seldom are agreeablebut cleverly done."-Spectator.

"The author has taken particular care to describe things as they actually exist. * The treatment in our author's hands is altogether fresh and enlivening. The volume sparkles with fun, and here and there we meet with some telling satire. It is well worth studying under an instructor at once so genial and honest as the writer, who has spoken so entertainingly and truthfully of the things he has witnessed."-Public Opinion.

"A Yorkshireman's coat of arms, according to the old saying, is a magpie, a fish, and a flea; a blazon supposed to typify its bearer's readiness to talk with any man, drink with any man, and bite any man. * The author of the lively little work which lies before us has no claim to bear the third charge of the coat of arms, being throughout filled with the most benevolent sentiments towards his fellow-creatures. But when we add that he has wandered incognito through dramshops and threepenny lodgings, model and otherwise, it will be seen that the first sentences of our description are not so far off the truth. * * The Saunterer, true to his name, describes in a light and easy manner the scenes of misery and vice he has been through; but from time to time he becomes serious, and shows that he is well aware of their terrible nature."-Graphic.

"A pleasant work to read."-Standard.

"The sketches are exceedingly well done."-Literary World. "Mr. Burnley has done his work well and carefully. He has portrayed scenes and incidents in the habits of the people that will be read with interest. There is much in this book to interest the philanthropist and all who wish to elevate the hard-working sons and daughters of toil."-Leeds Mercury.

"Mr. Burnley is a keen observer, and has noted most cleverly the peculiarities of many different specimens of humanity."-Manchester Examiner.

WEST RIDING SKETCHES

LONDON:

BRADFORD: T. BREAR.

[blocks in formation]

[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.]

THE favourable reception accorded to the author's previous collection of sketches-Phases of Bradford Life-has tempted him somewhat further a-field; and he now ventures forth with a volume less strictly local in its aim, hoping that his endeavour to depict sundry lights and shadows of the busy, earnest life of the West Riding will not be unacceptable.

The first seven sketches are re-published from All the Year Round, and the author here records his thanks to Mr. Dickens for being permitted to re-issue them in this form.
