NEW YORK, HOUSATONIC AND NORTHERN.

74 WALL STREET, NEW YORK,

December 1, 1875.

D. M. GREENE, Deputy State Engineer and Surveyor:

DEAR SIR.-I respond to your circular of the thirtieth November, calling attention to the necessity of a report of the New York, Housatonic and Northern Railroad Company. I beg leave to say that nothing has been done by such company for more than a year; that it is involved in litigation; that suits are pending for the foreclosure of its first mortgage, and efforts being made for a reorganization, with a view to the completion of the road; and though I remain its president, I am possessed of no data by which I can make the statutory report. The only part of the road which is finished and in operation is six miles in Connecticut, which is leased to, and operated by, the Housatonic Railroad Company; but that for more than a year no payments have been made by that company, in consequence of attachments, at the instance of various creditors, of the earnings.

Very respectfully yours,

WILLIAM R. KIRKLAND, President.
