The prince secured the slipper,
And said aloud that he
Would never touch his breakfast,
His dinner, or his tea,

Until he saw the maiden
Who that glass slipper wore;
And caused a proclamation to
Be made at every door,

That he would wed the lady
Who could that slipper wear.
So all the maidens tried it on,
Tall, short, plain, dark, and fair.
No one of them could fit it,
The shoe was far too small;
Then came the cruel sisters,
And tried it last of all.

They scarce could get a toe in;
In the picture you will see,
When Cinderella tried it
It fitted perfectly.

The fairy came that moment And turned her rags to lace; Dressed her in royal apparel, The prince's throne to grace.

But Cinderella ever

Was kind and good and true; Yes, even to her sisters,

Who did their malice rue.

Each tale a lesson teaches,
And children here may see,
The lowly are exalted,
Who in humility,

Try hard to do their duty,
And banish naughty pride;
For see, the kitchen-maiden
Is now a prince's bride.

HE churchyard of our village,
Was a pleasant spot of green,
And oft on sunny evenings,
Assembled there, were seen:

The elders in sage converse,
The youths in pleasant chat;
While the maidens sat together,
And whispered of this and that.
And words of goodly counsel
Were often spoken there,

By those who knew the wide world,
Its pleasure and its care.

And a returning wanderer

Would tell of where he'd been, And brave things he'd accomplished, And gallant sights he'd seen.

And while we sat and listened
In breathless silence there,

We dreamt of future triumphs,
When we should do and dare.
And wandering through the wide world
Full many a time since then,
I've longed to see but once more
That old churchyard again.
And when my life is ended,
And joys and griefs are past,
In the dear old village churchyard
May I find peace at last.

S

WINGING in the apple-trees,
In the sunny weather;

Look at Mary, Dick, and Tom,
Playing all together.

Gently do these boys, so kind,
Swing the little maid;

So she laughs and screams with joy,
And is not afraid.

N a pretty little nest,
Sleeps my little baby blest,
Guarded from all outward harm,
Mother's love will keep her warm.
