Listening to her loving speech
With obedience due.

All good children will obey,
Like this boy, in work and play.
Freddy's father is away,

Fighting for his country dear;
Fred does with his mother stay,
Her afflicted heart to cheer;
Soon papa will come again,
And will banish all their pain.
Then the sword that glitters bright
On the dreadful battle plain,
Will be sheathed and put away
When papa returns again.
All the mother's care will cease,
When papa returns in peace.

ITTING by the wayside, Pleasant in the spring, Underneath the green trees, Hear the birdies sing.

See the lambs how quiet,
Resting on the grass,

Listen to the chatter
Of the lad and lass.

"Guess again, sweet William,
Guess again, I pray,
What is in the basket,
What's to eat to-day."

Oh, you teasing Kitty, Won't you raise the lid ? Let me have one look in ; Do as you are bid!"

But the little maiden

66

Says with smile and pout,
Not a bit of food, till
You find my riddle out.”

So he has to guess hard;
And finds out at last
What is in the basket
With lid shut so fast.

Little Children gathering Water-cresses.

HAT do they gather by the brook?

Those little maidens gay; Why do they pause, and stop to look

Into the waters? say.

[graphic]

Tis Mary who would fill her lap
With water-cresses good;
While Janet's basket is heaped up
With cress to sell for food.

Their poor old mother is quite blind,
And so they work for her;
In winter in the bitter wind,
All in the dark they stir.

And rising up they light her fire,
Prepare her daily food,
Then sally forth to work for hire,
In field, or lane, or wood.

But when the watercresses come,
They each put on a gown,
So neat and clean, and go to sell
The cresses in the town.

Oh, may you prosper, children dear,
Increase your little store,

I'll buy your cresses every time
You bring them to our door.
