TH

HREE boys ran out of school when the clock struck one. They had done their tasks and could go out. So they were very glad. Their names were James, John, and Sam; and each of them had threepence to spend just as he liked.

As they went by a shop, James said, "I will have some apples." So he went in and got some; and there was an end of his threepence. Then John said, "I want a ball, and then we can play with it in the field." So he went into a toy-shop, and got a ball; and his threepence were spent too. But Sam saw a poor man who stood by the wayside; and the poor man said he had no food, so Sam got him a loaf with his threepence, and then went on after the others.

Which boy made the best use of his threepence? The one who spent it all on himself, or he who bought only toys, or he who gave what he could to the poor?

I

GREEDY ANNIE.

WILL tell you how Annie Brett was punished for being greedy. She had a cake sent to her at school, on her birthday. Her aunt, who had sent the cake, made sure that Annie would divide it with the other little girls, as she ought to have done; but Annie was too greedy for this, and wanted to have the whole cake to herself. So she went upstairs, and shut up the cake in her box. She thought, "I will come up and eat it when the rest are gone out." One day she went up to eat some of her cake, all by herself. But there was a small hole in the side of the box, and the mice had got in, and spoilt it all. Annie began to cry so loud that the cook came up, and when she heard what had happened, she said, "If you had not been so greedy, Miss Annie, your cake would not have been lost." And I think Annie was rightly served in losing her cake. Do not you?

BESSIE

ESSIE BELL was a little girl who did not think before she did anything, so she often did what she ought not to have done. One day she went into the yard and saw the big yard dog lying asleep in his kennel. His name was Wolf, and he was fastened to his kennel by a chain. Presently a man came and took Wolf out for a walk, holding him by a chain that he might not run away and do mischief; for Wolf was a savage dog. When Wolf had had his walk, he was taken home, and lay down in his kennel again. Bessie then thought she would take her bird out for a walk. So she fastened a string to its leg, and told it to walk along as Wolf had done. She did not think that a bird is not like a dog, and should not be used in the same way. So the was much hurt. How careless of Bessie!

ONE LITTLE PIG WHO WENT TO MARKET; OF A SECOND LITTLE PIG WHO STAYED AT HOME; OF A THIRD LITTLE PIG WHO GOT ROAST BEEF; OF A FOURTH LITTLE PIG WHO GOT NONE; AND OF A FIFTH LITTLE PIG WHO CRIED "WEE! WEE! WEE-E!" ALL THE WAY HOME.

F children wish to lead a happy life, they must try to become wise and good; and the sure way to do so is to be obedient to their parents and teachers, to be kind and gentle towards each other, and always ready to help those who cannot help themselves. The story of Five Little Pigs shows how foolish and wicked it is to neglect the words of a parent, and also shows that those who do act as they are told, get a great many other nice things, as well as roast beef, and are consequently very happy.
