WOOD (CHAIRMAN), EDWARD H. WASON, JOHN W. SUMMERS, JOHN N. SANDLIN, AND THOMAS H. CULLEN, OF THE COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, IN CHARGE OF THE INDEPENDENT OFFICES APROPRIATION BILL FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1928, ON THE DAYS FOLLOWING, NAMELY TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1926. ALIEN PROPERTY CUSTODIAN STATEMENT OF HON. HOWARD SUTHERLAND, ALIEN PROPERTY · CUSTODIAN Mr. WOOD. Senator, if you have a general statement you would like to make, we shall be glad to hear it. Mr. SUTHERLAND. I woul say, Mr. Chairman, that we have kept within the appropriation made last year and have cut down our estimates for the next fiscal year considerably. Our appropriation for the current year was $130,000. Our estimated expenditures for the current year are $127,500. We now have only 62 employees on the appropriation roll. Our estimates for the next fiscal year are $97,500, which is a reduction of $32,500 from the appropriation made last year. The estimated number of employees on this roll will be 44. Of course, if H. R. 15009 is passed by both houses and becomes a law, we will be under the necessity of employing more people, but we will be allowing claims and we will provide for that out of the trusts. There is a small percentage taken from the trusts which forms a fund, out of which the clerical and other expenses of administering the trusts are paid. So that even though we may need some additional employees, in order to hurry the job along, we are not asking for more money. That will be taken care of by the fund itself. EXPENDITURES IN ADDITION TO THE APPROPRIATION Mr. WOOD. Senator, how much did you spend in the last year in addition to your appropriation? Mr. SUTHERLAND. I have here a statement of special account No. 2, showing receipts from July 1, 1925, to June 30, 1926: The administrative expense on account of claims, $298,099.79; special collection account, $36,375.33; control section, $902.84; income division, $44,847.74; total, $380,225.69; interest on bank balance, $2,407.98; making a total of $382,633.67. 1. |
